Lockport Woman Arrested After Starvation Death of Her Dog on Christmas
A Lockport woman has been arrested in connection with the starvation death of her dog, Eve, on Christmas Day, according to authorities.
The Niagara SPCA’s Senior Investigator Jonathan Bondi reported that the dog, a small-breed named Eve, was found emaciated and covered in urine while wandering on Ruhlmann Road in Lockport. Weighing only four pounds, Eve was in critical condition when discovered.
Bondi explained that after bringing the dog to the shelter, they shared her condition on social media, hoping for leads. “Initially, we received some tips, but after the dog’s unfortunate passing on Christmas, the community rallied and provided credible and specific information identifying the owner,” Bondi told WBEN. This led to the arrest of 39-year-old Ashley Pritchard.
An official necropsy confirmed Eve died from starvation. During questioning, Pritchard reportedly admitted responsibility but showed little remorse. “She accepted what she did but didn’t express surprise or regret,” Bondi noted.
Pritchard has been charged with Failure to Provide, a Class “A” misdemeanor. However, the charge could be elevated to a felony if the Niagara County District Attorney determines it necessary.
Bondi emphasized that the SPCA aims to ensure Pritchard is placed on the county’s animal abuse registry, which would prohibit her from owning animals for a minimum of 15 years. Additional penalties, such as jail time and fines, may also be pursued.
Pritchard was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
