CHICAGO (AP) — José Abreu hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning and the Chicago White Sox won their fourth straight, 9-3 over the Minnesota Twins. Abreu went deep to left center on the first pitch he saw from Jorge Alcala for his seventh homer. He narrowly missed another one in the third when Max Kepler reached over the right-center wall to catch Abreu’s drive. The AL MVP had two hits and scored three runs. Yasmani Grandal lofted a three-run homer in the second for first-place Chicago. It was just the sixth multi-homer game for the White Sox. Jorge Polanco homered for Minnesota.

 

 

ORMOND BEACH, FLORIDA — NIACC sophomore Thea Lunning shot a 90 in the second round Tuesday at the NJCAA Division I national championships on the Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club course in Ormond Beach Florida.

Lunning, who is from Mason City, recorded a 91 on the first day of the 72-hole tournament on Monday and is in 68th place with a 181 through the first two rounds.

Lunning recorded pars on all four of the par threes on the par 72, 6,014-yard course. She recorded pars on holes No. 4, No. 6, No. 13 and No. 16.

The final two rounds of the four-day tournament are set for Wednesday and Thursday.

 

 

CEDAR FALLS — University of Northern Iowa head wrestling coach and Osage native Doug Schwab has signed a contract extension through the 2027-28 season. Schwab, the 2020 Big 12 Coach of the Year, has had 60 NCAA qualifiers and 17 All-Americans during his tenure. He has a dual record of 90-58. The Panthers have finished in the top three at the Big 12 championship and have had two champions in three of the last four seasons. The Panthers have had at least one All-American for each of the last eight seasons. Off of the mat, UNI had one of its best academic years with back-to-back semesters with team GPAs over 3.3. The Panthers recorded a GPA of 3.38 in the spring of 2020 and 3.39 in the fall of 2020. A school-record 18 wrestlers earned Academic All-Big 12 honors this season.

 

 

DETROIT (AP) — Karl-Anthony Towns scored 28 points and Anthony Edwards added 22 as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Detroit Pistons 119-100 in a game with significant lottery implications. Minnesota’s second straight win was its 22nd in 69 games, while the Pistons dropped to 20-50. The Houston Rockets (16-53) are the only team with fewer wins than Detroit. There are three teams – the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers – with 21 wins.Ricky Rubio added 19 points for Minnesota while DeAngelo Russell had 15 points and 10 assists .Saddiq Bey had 21 points and Saben Lee added 20 for Detroit, which lost for the 10th time in 12 games.

 

 

CEDAR FALLS — UNI softball coach Ryan Jacobs hopes the Panthers can raise their level of play even more as they get set for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Evansville, Indiana. The Panthers have won eight of their last nine games and as the two seed have a bye into Friday’s semifinals.

Jacobs traces the turnaround to a team meeting prior to their home opener against Evansville at the beginning of April.

The Panthers responded by scoring 45 runs in a three game sweep.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Mason City High girls soccer team scored eight times in the first half on their way to a 10-0 win over Fort Dodge at home on Tuesday evening. The Mohawks are now 5-7 on the year and will host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Thursday evening.

FORT DODGE — Mason City scored two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie as the Mohawk boys soccer team beat Fort Dodge 3-1 on Tuesday in Fort Dodge. Jonathan Morales, Logan Mayberry and Logan Young scored goals for Mason City, as the Mohawks improve to 4-9 on the season. Mason City will host Ankeny Centennial on Friday night
