MASON CITY — #2 Newman opened up baseball tournament play last night with an 11-1, five-inning win over Lake Mills in a Class 1A District 4 semifinal round contest that you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Doug Taylor was 2-for-3 with a home run and five runs batted in and picked up the win on the mound, going three-and-two-thirds innings, striking out 10. Newman improves to 30-3 on the season and will host West Hancock in the district final on Saturday. The Eagles beat St. Edmond 6-2 in a district semifinal game in Fort Dodge last night.

FOREST CITY — Forest City took advantage of a three-run outfield error in the bottom of the fifth to solidify a 5-1 win over Clear Lake in a Class 2A District 5 semifinal round contest played in Forest City last night, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. The Lions end their season with a 10-14 record. Forest City improves to 16-7 and will face Top of Iowa Conference rival Osage in Saturday’s district final in Forest City. Osage on Wednesday completed their suspended game with Garner-Hayfield-Ventura with an 11-1, six inning win.

 

MASON CITY — Mason City wrapped up the regular season with a 10-2 win at home against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Cooper Wiemann picked up the win while Carter Thomas had three hits including a two-run homer. Justyn Rivera had three hits and three runs scored. Mason City improves to 21-17 and will travel to Ames Friday night for a Class 4A substate quarterfinal round contest that you’ll hear on KGLO starting at 7 o’clock.

 

MASON CITY — Madi Elwood had a two-run homer while Ellyse Ball also knocked in two runs as Newman beat St. Ansgar 5-3 in a Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinal round softball contest last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. Macy Kellar picked up the win, striking out two and allowing only four hits. Knights coach Tom Dunn says it was tough to see two 20-win teams face each other this early in the regional tournament.

Newman improves to 23-9 and will travel to Fort Dodge to face 14th-ranked St. Edmond in a regional semifinal game Friday night. Dunn knows it will be a challenging contest.

St. Edmond beat AGWSR 8-1 last night.

MANLY — Top-ranked Central Springs started tournament play last night with a 10-0, five-inning win over Emmetsburg in a Class 2A Region 5 quarterfinal round contest in Manly. Lizzy Hamand had three runs batted in while Madisyn Kelley knocked in a pair of runs. Cooper Klaahsen picked up the win, striking out 14. Central Springs improves to 29-1 on the season and will host Lake Mills on Friday night in the regional semifinal round. The Bulldogs beat Belmond-Klemme 7-5 last night

GARNER — After winning five straight games last week, Clear Lake faltered in their Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinal round contest, falling at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 6-4. Clear Lake ends their season with an 8-14 record. The Cardinals now face Algona in the regional semifinals on Friday night. The Bulldogs beat Forest City last night 12-0.

CHICAGO (AP) — Andrew Vaughn tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Leury Garcia hit a game-ending single in the 10th to give the Chicago White Sox a 9-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox trailed five times in the game and tied it each time before taking their first and only lead in extra innings to avoid a three-game sweep. Chicago snapped a seven-game losing streak to the AL Central-leading Twins. Playing his first game since April 23, Eloy Jiménez made an immediate impact for the White Sox, hitting a two-run homer and an RBI single. Jorge Polanco homered twice for Minnesota.

 

 

DES MOINES — Principal Park in Des Moines was damaged during Tuesday night’s storm. Sam Bernabe is President and General Manager of the Iowa Cubs.

Bernabe says a temporary batter’s eye blew over and took out a chunk of the centerfield wall.

Bernabe says it should be fixed by the next home stand.

The Iowa Cubs are in Indianapolis and return home next Tuesday to play Buffalo.
