CRESTON— The NIACC men split a pair of contests over the weekend. On Saturday, they dropped a 95-67 decision at Southwestern. Myles Tucker led the way with 15 points. The Trojans bounced back with an 89-48 win at the Wartburg JV Sunday afternoon in Waverly. Noah Rigatuso had 17 points while Tucker added 13. NIACC is now 16-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference and will host Iowa Western on Wednesday night.

 

 

CRESTON — The NIACC women fell on Saturday afternoon 73-62 at Southwestern. Alyssa Hames led five Trojans in double figure scoring with 14 points. NIACC drops to 13-8 overall and 4-8 in the conference and will host Iowa Western on Wednesday night in a women’s/men’s doubleheader starting at 5:30 that you can hear on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls used a 29-10 third quarter to shut down Newman 70-41 in Top of Iowa Conference basketball play on Saturday afternoon. Chloe Frank had 21 to lead the Cardinals, who are now 12-6 overall. Newman drops to 5-12 overall. The Newman boys needed overtime to down the Cardinals 67-63. James Jennings had 28 while Doug Taylor added 20 to lead the Knights, who are now 15-1 overall and 12-1 in conference play. Both Newman teams will host North Butler tonight.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Izaiah Brockington scored 15 points and Tyrese Hunter added 14 as No. 23 Iowa State downed Missouri on Saturday 67-50 as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Brockington converted all eight of his free throw attempts and made three 3-pointers for the Cyclones (16-5).DaJuan Gordon led Missouri (8-12) with 15 points. Amari Davis scored 11.Iowa State shot 58.3% in the second half and forced 18 Missouri turnovers.The Cyclones seized control with a 15-0 run in the second half, building a 49-34 advantage. Brockington, Caleb Grill and Aljaz Kunc hit consecutive 3-pointers during the scoring spree, pulling Iowa State out of an early funk. Missouri missed ten of its first 11 shots in the second half.

 

 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – D.J. Wilkins scored 20 points to propel Drake to a 77-68 victory over Loyola Chicago on Sunday. Wilkins made 6 of 12 shots with two 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (16-6, 7-2 Missouri Valley Conference). Tucker Devries and Garrett Sturtz tallied 13 points apiece, while ShanQuan Hemphill scored 10 off the bench. Darnell Brodie had nine points and 10 boards.

 

 

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – AJ Green scored 24 points and Noah Carter scored 21 and Northern Iowa beat Illinois State 79-64 on Saturday.
Carter scored the first seven points for the Panthers after halftime to give Northern Iowa a 37-35 lead and they never trailed again. Trae Berhow’s jumper with 10:35 left extended the lead to 57-38. The Panthers (11-9, 7-3 Missouri Valley Conference) have won back-to-back contests following a two-game skid and have seven of their last nine.

 

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Karl-Anthony Towns had 31 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, and the Minnesota Timberwolves routed the shorthanded Utah Jazz 126-106. Jaden McDaniels scored a season-high 22 points off the bench for Minnesota by going a perfect 9-of-9 shooting. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 23 and Mike Conley 22 for Utah, which lost its fifth straight. Utah veteran forward Joe Ingles exited the game in the second quarter with a left knee injury. Utah also was without coach Quin Snyder because he is in the league’s health and safety protocols.

 

SAINT ANSGAR — Osage crowned four champions and four runners-up in winning another Top of Iowa Conference wrestling tournament title on Saturday in St. Ansgar. The Green Devils had 254 ½ points, with Nashua-Plainfield finishing second with 229 points as they had four champions. Central Springs finished third with 161 points with two champions. Clayton McDonough of Central Springs became the first four-time champion in the history of the conference tournament by taking the 138-pound classification. He was later joined by North Butler-Clarksville’s Chet Buss, who won his fourth conference title by winning at 285.
