FORT MYERS — Newly-acquired right-hander Sonny Gray threw four perfect innings, racking up six strikeouts as part of an 8-2 win for the Minnesota Twins over Baltimore Sunday afternoon in Grapefruit League baseball, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Miguel Sano had a two-run homer in the third as the Twins are now 8-9 in spring training games. The Twins will host Boston in a game you’ll hear starting at noon on KGLO today.

CENTERVILLE — The NIACC baseball team dropped the first game of their weekend series at Indian Hills on Sunday 16-8 in Centerville. Cody Kelly had his ninth homer of the season with a three-run shot in the fourth. Indian Hills broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth to take the win. NIACC drops to 12-9 overall and will complete their series with a doubleheader this afternoon.

CEDAR FALLS — Clear Lake native, Newman alum and Northern Iowa offensive lineman Trevor Penning does not care which team drafts him. Penning is a likely first round selection and all 32 NFL teams were present at UNI’s Pro Day recently.

Penning is part of a growing list of UNI players to get a chance at an NFL career and says it is proof the big schools don’t always get it right.

Penning’s stock rose after an impressive performance at the Senior Bowl.

The NFL Draft is April 28th through the 30th.

AMES — Colby Reeder is expected to make an immediate impact for the Iowa State defense. After four years at Delaware Reeder transferred to ISU and is expected to help a linebacking corps that lost Mike Rose and Jake Hummel off last year’s team that finished 7-6.

Reeder has been impressed with the commitment level in the Cyclone program.

Reeder says he had a desire to play against Big 12 offenses.

The Cyclones held their first open practice over the weekend and will open the season September 3rd at home against Southeast Missouri.

NEW ORLEANS — University of Iowa men’s basketball sophomore Keegan Murray has been named the recipient of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award. The announcement was made by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top power forward in Division I men’s college basketball. He is the first Hawkeye and Big Ten player to earn the honor.

The Hawkeyes have had a player earn a national positional award each of the past three seasons. All-American Luka Garza repeated as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year in 2020 and 2021.

Murray is a finalist for the Wooden Award, with the winner being announced on April 5. He was a finalist for the following national awards: Naismith Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Trophy, Lute Olson National Player of the Year, and Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year.

Last month, Murray became the program’s fourth consensus first-team All-American
