ADEL — Clear Lake is in second place after the first day of the Class 3A girls state golf tournament at the River Valley Golf Course in Adel. The Lions shot a 360 and sit 12 shots back from the leader Gilbert. Dubuque Wahlert is third with a 376. Meghan DeLong had the best score after the first day for Clear Lake with a 10-over 82. She’s seven shots behind the first day leaders Eden Lohrbach of Gilbert and Rylee Heryford of Newton. Also for Clear Lake, Rebeca DeLong is in 10th place with an 86, Jaden Ainley is tied for 18th with an 89, Macey Holck is tied for 33rd with a 103, Meghan Paine is tied for 51st with a 109, while Lily James is tied for 58th with a 112.

 

CEDAR FALLS — Garner-Hayfield-Ventura is eighth after the first day of the Class 2A girls state golf tournament at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. The Cardinals had a 391 first round score and sit 43 shots back from team leader New Hampton. Rylee Frayne had the best first-day score for Garner-Hayfield-Ventura with a 23-over 95 and sits in a tie for 25th place. Also for the Cardinals, Audrey Overgaard and Jailyn Krein are tied for 27th with a 96, Kenedee Frayne is tied for 49th with a 104, Sydney Helgeson is tied for 58th with a 109, and Jessa Heitland is in 65th place with a 115.

 

MARSHALLTOWN — At the Class 1A girls state golf tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, Northwood-Kensett’s Emma Davidson shot an 86 and sits in a tie for 7th place, 11 shots behind the leader Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully. Meg Thompson of North Butler is tied for 11th with an 87, while Newman’s Emma Weiner is tied for 22nd with a 94. Bishop Garrigan of Algona is the team leader after the first day with a 361, with Grundy Center in second place six shots back.

MASON CITY — The Mason City High baseball team rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Dallas Center-Grimes 5-4 last night at Roosevelt Field. Kaden Tyler picked up the win on the mound. Carter Thomas had two hits including a triple and knocked in three runs. Kellar Malek added two hits and two RBI. Mason City is 4-1 on the season and will travel to Decorah tonight.

 

MASON CITY — Newman only needed four innings to beat Algona 16-1 last night. Jack Maznio, Bennett Sunken and Nash Holmgaard each were 3-for-4, with Holmgaard knocking in six runs. Eli Brinkley picked up the win, going all four innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits. Newman is now 7-0 on the season and will host Nashua-Plainfield tonight.

MASON CITY — The Mason City High softball team picked up a 14-4, six-inning win over Waverly-Shell Rock at home last night. Sam Norcross, Lainna Duncan and Brogan Evans all were 3-for-4, with Duncan knocking in four runs. Adyson Evans was 2-for-3 with a home run. Mason City is 1-2 on the season and will host New Hampton tonight

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield drove in two runs with a double and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s double, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2. Josh Staumont (2-1) worked a scoreless inning to pick up the win. Scott Barlow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded two on base in the ninth to earn his fifth save. Devin Smeltzer pitched seven scoreless innings for the Twins before Tyler Duffey (2-3) let the lead slip away in the eighth.

 

 

OMAHA — Iowa’s NCAA Tournament hopes were dealt a damaging blow in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes managed only two hits and struck out 15 times in a 5-2 loss to Penn State. The Hawks need a win in the losers bracket later this morning to stay alive.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller. The Hawkeyes season may be on the line as well.

Heller expects the Hawkeyes to bounce back with a solid effort.

The Hawkeyes take on Purdue this morning. The Boilermakers lost to second seeded Rutgers 10-3.
