ANN ARBOR — Another road win for 24th-ranked Iowa. The Hawkeyes built a 17 point halftime advantage then held off a late Michigan rally for an 82-71 victory last night as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. It’s Iowa’s eighth win in the last nine games. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery.

Keegan Murray had 23 points, Jordan Bohannon had 19 and Kris Murray came off the bench with 19 as Iowa improves to 12-7 in the Big Ten.

Kris Murray says the Hawks are gaining confidence with their current five game winning streak.

Iowa visits 20th-ranked Illinois Sunday night.

 

 

ST. LOUIS — UNI’s Ben Jacobson has been named the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year for a record fifth time. Jacobson helped lead a Panther team that battled early season injuries and a 4-7 start to win a second Valley regular season title in three years.

Jacobson says the success of this season can be traced to last spring.

In his 16th season at the helm Jacobson credits the players for building a consistent winner.

The Panthers are the top seed in the Valley Tournament and open at Noon today against Illinois State.

 

 

ST. LOUIS — Drake opens the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis Friday night by taking on Southern Illinois. The third seeded Bulldogs edged the Salukis twice during the regular season, including a 62-60 win in Des Moines to close the regular season.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries who expects another close game.

Tonight’s game is scheduled for an 8:30 start.

 

 

INDIANAPOLIS — The Iowa Hawkeye women play Northwestern late this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. The 12th-ranked Hawkeyes are coming off a share of the regular season title and have a good chance to serve as host of the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder who feels a victory tonight would be a big step toward serving as a host site.

Northwestern advanced with a Thursday win over Minnesota

WEST DES MOINES — The Mason City Mohawk high school hockey club was shutout twice by Lincoln in the regular season, but Mason City downed the Stars 4-1 in the opening round of the Midwest High School Hockey League tournament in West Des Moines on Thursday. Zak Molstad and Dominic Despenas each had two goals while Kellen Kantaris handed out two assists. Mason City will now face Kansas City in the tournament’s quarterfinal round this afternoon.

 

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I wrestling tournament is today and tomorrow at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. NIACC qualified wrestlers in nine of the ten weight classes, including the defending 165 pound national champion Christian Minto at 165 pounds. Other national qualifiers for the Trojans are Cruz Aguilar (125), ninth-ranked Clarence Lee-Green (133), Quentrevion Campbell (141), fifth-ranked Deville Dentis (149), Josh Barretta (157), Ein Carlos (174), seventh-ranked Chase McCleish (184) and second-ranked Jose Valdez (197). NIACC is coming off winning their first district championship since resuming the sport of wrestling in 2008.
