A 38-year-old Bronx man was charged with first-degree rape after allegedly abusing a woman near Bergen Avenue and East 149th Street earlier this month. According to the initial NYPD report, the victim was walking around 1 a.m. on Monday, August 5.

The suspect, Papa Diop, approached her and asked for directions. She was then “forcibly raped.” The NYPD reported that the suspect escaped on foot. The victim was sent to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition.

According to sources, a police officer recognized him from leaflets distributed throughout the borough and detained him on the 4 train this morning. Anyone with information regarding the case is requested to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
