Police in Manhattan’s Upper East Side are currently on the lookout for a potential rapist who was foiled in his attempt to commit a sexual assault thanks to the swift actions of a vigilant doorman armed with a flashlight.
Hector Mateo, the doorman, expressed his desire to have done more in apprehending the potential rapist.
“I didn’t chase after him. Instead, I assisted the young girl who was lying on the floor, covered in blood, crying, and clearly in a state of shock,” recounted Mateo.
Authorities are currently on the lookout for an individual who allegedly attempted to sexually assault a 19-year-old woman in close proximity to Gracie Mansion during the early hours of Saturday morning, at 1 a.m.
Mateo sprang into action as soon as he heard the commotion. With a flashlight in hand, he rushed towards the scene to confront the would-be rapist. At the same time, other neighbors dialed 911 for assistance. Despite the potential danger, Mateo’s primary concern was to comfort the young female victim, showing his bravery and willingness to protect others.
According to the doorman, he noticed a change in the woman’s behavior and quickly realized that it was time for her to leave. He explained, “She was visibly shaken. Based on her account, the man attempted to sexually assault her by trying to touch her inappropriately. Fortunately, she was able to escape without being raped.”
The quick work of the doorman has been praised by neighbors, who are concerned but also consider him a hero.
Gabby Newman, a 20-year-old resident in doorman Mateo’s building, expressed her admiration for his incredible actions. “I wholeheartedly applaud him for what he did,” she said.
Tina Davis, another resident from the East Side, added her perspective on the matter.
Davis expressed her gratitude towards the doorman, emphasizing their importance in the city. She described the experience as terrifying and acknowledged the crucial role that doormen play.
The victim received medical treatment and observation at New York Presbyterian and Cornell Medical Center. The Manhattan Special Victims Squad of the NYPD is currently investigating the incident.
