CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning for the second straight game, this time hitting a sacrifice fly, and the Minnesota Twins won their ninth in a row, 6-5 over the Chicago White Sox. Chicago’s Andrew Benintendi homered leading off the eighth to tie it at 5 after Minnesota scored twice in the top half. But the Twins pulled it out in the ninth. Byron Buxton walked and took third on Manuel Margot’s single. Kepler then put Minnesota on top with a sacrifice fly to center. Jhoan Duran pitched around a leadoff single by Tommy Pham in the bottom half and picked up the save.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Minnesota Twins reinstated closer Jhoan Duran from the 15-day injured list before Tuesday’s game. A strained right oblique muscle kept him out of the team’s first 28 games. Duran was hurt while warming up in spring training on March 17. The right-hander made two appearances with Triple-A St. Paul last week on a rehabilitation assignment. He allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in two innings. The 26-year-old Duran has a 2.15 ERA with 173 strikeouts in 130 innings over his first two major league seasons. He has 35 career saves.

MASON CITY — NIACC’s Zach Dohrmann has been selected as the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference’s Division II pitcher of the week for his play last week. The sophomore right-hander from Farmington Minnesota tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout against Northeast Community College in a 3-0 win with four strikeouts and one walk. CEDAR FALLS — The Northern Iowa softball team takes a nine game winning streak into the final week of the regular season which begins tonight at home against Iowa. The Panthers are 28-15 overall.

That’s UNI coach Ryan Jacobs. The Panthers last played a non-conference game back on April 2nd at Iowa State. Jacobs used three different pitchers in an 8-3 loss to the Cyclones. UNI closes Missouri Valley Conference play beginning Friday with the start of a three game series at Valparaiso.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves will enter their second round playoff series against defending champion Denver with an unsettled bench because coach Chris Finch will be recovering from knee surgery. Finch was hurt in a sideline collision with Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley. He will have his ruptured right patellar tendon repaired Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made the details public. Game 1 is Saturday in Denver. The Timberwolves swept Phoenix in the first round.

AMES — Iowa State linebacker Caleb Bacon likes the chemistry on the team heading into next season. The Cyclones return 18 starters from last year’s team that finished 7-6. Bacon is a former walk-on from Lake Mills and is part of a defense that returns nine starters.

Bacon feels the added experience will help the defense be even better next season.

Bacon finished second on the team last season with 60 tackles and says he is a much more confident player.

The Cyclones open next season at home on August 31st against North Dakota.

IOWA CITY — With Deacon Hill in the transfer portal, Marco Lainez is the backup quarterback at Iowa heading into summer workouts. The redshirt freshman from New Jersey made a brief appearance in a Citrus Bowl loss to Tennessee but led the Hawkeyes in rushing with 51 yards. Iowa center Logan Jones.

Jones says the ability of Lainez to run the ball does not change the blocking assignments.

Starting quarterback Cade McNamara was limited during spring drills as he recovers from an ACL injury. He is expected to return to full strength this summer. The Hawkeyes open next season at home on August 31st against Illinois State.
