ALGONA — Clear Lake jumped out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 64-48 win over Humboldt last night in a Class 3A boys basketball substate final played in Algona, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. After a 40-year drought, Clear Lake is now making its second trip to the state tournament in three years. Coach Jeremey Ainley says it’s a great feeling for his team and for the community.

Ainley says building a basketball culture at Clear Lake has proven successful.

Carson Toebe led the Lions with 28 points. Clear Lake is the #8 seed in the 3A state tournament and will face top-seed Ballard of Huxley in the 3A state quarterfinals next Tuesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 o’clock, with the pre-game at about 1:30 on KRIB.

 

 

ST. ANSGAR — St. Ansgar faces Montezuma in the Class 1A girls state quarterfinals tonight at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Saints coach Scott Cakerice says they want to improve on their state semifinal round appearance last year.

Cakerice says they’ll face a three-point barrage from Montezuma.

Both teams come into tonight’s game with 22-1 records. Tipoff between St. Ansgar and Montezuma is scheduled for 8 o’clock tonight. You can hear live and local coverage of the game on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com starting with the pre-game at about 7:45.

DES MOINES — The Clear Lake girls now know their 3A semifinal opponent on Thursday. Unity Christian of Orange City cruised to a 70-42 win over Roland-Story in the final 3A quarterfinal round game played on Tuesday morning. AMES — A slow start was costly for Iowa State to close out the home season. Texas used a 23-4 first half run to take control as the 14th-ranked Longhorns cruised to an 81-67 win in Ames.

That’s ISU coach Steve Prohm. The Cyclones had 17 turnovers and made just eight of 28 from three point range.

The Cyclones struggled in the opening half against the Texas press.

Iowa State falls to 0-16 in the Big 12.

 

 

IOWA CITY — The Iowa Hawkeye women open the final week of the regular season at 11th-ranked Indiana tonight. The Hoosiers beat the Hawkeyes in their first meeting in Iowa City.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder who feels a demanding schedule has prepared her team for the stretch run.

The Hawkeyes are 10-7 in the Big Ten

 

 

MASON CITY — The NIACC volleyball team dropped a three sets to one decision to 9th-ranked Hawkeye Community College last night in Mason City, 15-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22. Freshman Grace Tobin led the Lady Trojans with 14 kills, 11 digs and three blocks, while sophomore Becca Steffen had 31 assists, 18 digs, three kills and three blocks. NIACC drops to 6-5 on the season and will return to action at home on Thursday night hosting 5th-ranked Iowa Central at 7 o’clock.
