CEDAR FALLS — UNI quarterback Theo Day says the Panther receivers and running backs have been a major factor in their success as they get ready to visit 5th-ranked North Dakota State. The Michigan State transfer has led the Panthers to three straight victories.

Day says he has learned quickly how important the series with North Dakota State is.

Day says each game is helping him settle in as the starter.

Kickoff on Saturday in Fargo is scheduled for 1 o’clock.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings made a major investment in their defense for this year. They’re set up better to stop the run. The results haven’t yet followed suit. The Vikings allowed a season-high 184 rushing yards in a 14-7 loss to Cleveland. They’re fifth worst in the NFL with an average of 4.8 yards allowed per rush. The Browns have the most productive running game in the league. Still, the Vikings gave up too many long gains to win. The most costly was a 30-yard run by Kareem Hunt on third-and-20 to set up a field goal late in the second quarter.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The falloff the Minnesota Twins experienced after two straight division titles could be traced in some places to natural regression. The real surprise was how sharply and swiftly they faded. The Twins lost five straight games during their first homestand of the season and never saw the .500 mark again. They finished 73-89 in last place in the AL Central. The biggest culprit was the pitching staff. After ranking ninth in the majors in team ERA in 2019 and fourth in 2020, the Twins were 26th this year.

LAKE MILLS — Forest City won the boys team title while North Union took the girls team title at the Lake Mills Invitational cross country meet yesterday at Rice Lake. Forest City had their five runners finish in the top 12 of the boys race to give them 37 points, easily outdistancing North Butler and North Union, who finished second and third with 74 and 76 points respectively. Joey Hovinga won the boys race in a time of 16:55. North Union had three runners finish in the top five to give them the girls title with 36 points. Forest City finished second with 46 followed by West Hancock with 52 and North Butler with 85. Lydia Maas of Hampton-Dumont-CAL was the girls race winner in a time of 20:51.
