Teenager Convicted of Engaging in Sexual Activity with Minor Pleads for Release from Dubai Jail

Fakana, a resident of north London, crossed paths with the girl, who has now reached the age of 18, while on a family vacation in Dubai in September.

Although their relationship is considered legal in the UK, it is important to note that Dubai law strictly forbids individuals below the age of 18 from participating in any form of sexual relationships.

The girl’s mother discovered messages and photos, leading to the revelation of the relationship. She then filed a complaint with Dubai police, ultimately resulting in Fakana’s arrest at his hotel. According to BBC, he was later sentenced for his actions.

“I never had any intention of breaking the law,” Fakana expressed through the campaign group Detained in Dubai. She humbly appeals to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, requesting forgiveness and a pardon. Fakana earnestly pleads to be allowed to return home and regain her life.

Fakana, who is currently out on bail, is eagerly awaiting the result of his appeal. His parents, who came back to the UK to assist him in his legal fight, have expressed how immensely distressing this situation has been for them.

Radha Stirling, the founder of Detained in Dubai, has expressed her strong criticism towards the sentence, deeming it as “unfathomable.”

“It’s unjust to sentence someone to a year in jail, and it’s even more unjust to tear apart a family and ruin the life of this young 18-year-old,” Stirling expressed, exuding confidence in the appeal’s potential for success. However, he also raised concerns about the time and diplomatic effort that might be required.

The Dubai authorities had previously justified the ruling, emphasizing that the complaint had been handled in accordance with international procedures. “Dubai’s legal system is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of every individual and ensuring fair and unbiased judicial proceedings,” asserted the government.
