CLEAR LAKE — Pairings for the round of 16 in the high school football playoffs have been set after the lower classes played their first-round contests last Friday night and the upper classes wrapped up their regular season:

== Clear Lake beat Unity Christian 41-28 on Friday night in a Class 2A first round game. The Lions now head over to Rock Rapids this coming Friday night to face 10th-ranked Central Lyon/George-Little Rock

== In Class A, West Hancock and North Butler advanced with wins back on Friday night. The top-ranked Eagles downed Alta-Aurelia 43-7 and now will host South O’Brien on Friday night. The 8th-ranked Bearcats had a 12-0 win over Starmont and will travel Friday night to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn

== In Class 3A, Hampton-Dumont-CAL qualified as an at-large team and will travel to face 5th-ranked Humboldt in the opening round of the 3A playoffs this Friday night.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and the Iowa State defense made a late stand in the closing minutes as the Cyclones knocked off No. 8 Oklahoma State 24-21. Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:29 left. The Cyclones’ defense then forced a three-and-out and stopped the Cowboys on fourth down with 1:09 left. Purdy kneeled twice in victory formation and fans stormed the field at Jack Trice Stadium as the clock ran out to celebrate Iowa State’s first win over a top-10 opponent since 2018.

 

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — Theo Day threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, Matthew Cook made four field goals, including a career-long 55-yarder, and Northern Iowa beat South Dakota State 26-17. Day was intercepted by Graham Spalding with 4:09 remaining in the fourth quarter but SDSU couldn’t capitalize as Cole Frahm missed a 47-yard field goal. UNI went three-and-out, but Bryce Flater sealed it with a quarterback sack. Day was 11 of 21 with an interception for Northern Iowa (4-3, 2-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference). Isaiah Weston caught four passes for 125 yards and a score, and Bradrick Shaw rushed for a touchdown.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves hung on Saturday for a 96-89 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans after Karl-Anthony Towns fouled out. Towns scored 15 of his 25 points in the first quarter. He had to watch the last half of the fourth quarter from the bench after picking up a technical that was his sixth foul. Anthony Edwards had 14 of his 19 points in the first half for the undefeated Timberwolves. They leaned on their defense and forced a franchise-record-tying 30 turnovers by the Pelicans. Brandon Ingram had 30 points and seven turnovers for New Orleans.

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Roman Josi had a four-point game, Connor Ingram won his first NHL start, and Nashville ended Minnesota’s four-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Sunday. Ryan Johansen scored twice, Josi, Tanner Jeannot and Filip Forsberg added goals and Matt Duchene had three assists for the Predators. Nashville has won eight of its last nine against Minnesota, allowing two or fewer goals in seven of those victories. Ingram made 33 saves. Nick Bjugstad and Nico Sturm scored for Minnesota, which was looking to start a season with five straight wins for the first time since 2007-08.

MASON CITY — Both of NIACC’s soccer teams have advanced in Region XI tournament play after wins over the weekend. The NIACC women outscored Scott Community College 7-6 in penalty kicks for a 1-0 win on Saturday. Scott had downed NIACC in both regular season meetings. NIACC will face top-seed Northeast Community College in the regional semifinals on Tuesday. The NIACC men shutout Dakota County Technical College 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at home. The Trojans play on Wednesday at second-seed Southeastern in the regional semifinals.
