MASON CITY — NIACC women’s basketball player Autam Mendez is among the six finalists for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Mendez had one of the best seasons in Lady Trojan history. The NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Year averaged 16.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the top-ranked NIACC squad. She helped lead NIACC to a 32-1 record, their second-straight Region XI Championship and the No. 1 overall seed of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament before the event was canceled due to COVID-19. Mendez is the only player in NIACC history with 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds and 100 career 3-point goals. She was the ICCAC Player of the Year and a First Team All-Region selection and will continue her career at San Jose State University in the fall. The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference will announce the award winner on Wednesday.

DES MOINES — Drake Relays director Blake Boldon hopes high school events will be part of the 111th edition if it is rescheduled for the fall. The Relays were postponed in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Boldon is looking at the possibility of hosting a meet before the year is over.

The Relays are primarily made up of college and high school events and Boldon is not sure what it might look like if it is held outside of the track and field outdoor season.

Boldon doubts a rescheduled meet could include current high school seniors.

The Drake Relays were originally scheduled to take place April 22nd through the 25th in Des Moines.

UNDATED (AP) — The financial impact of the pandemic on college football carries a particular concern for the so-called Group of Five conferences. Many of those schools schedule games against top-level Power Five schools for payments that can exceed $1 million. If the season is shortened, Power Five schools may drop those games to play only teams in their own conference. That would cost Group of Five schools millions. This season, 39 major college football schools have scheduled a total of 49 such games worth an estimated $65 million.

NEW YORK (AP) — WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert says the league is focusing on a half dozen scenarios to play this summer. Engelbert didn’t go into detail about each scenario but told The Associated Press Friday that they are looking at playing in either one, possibly two sites at most. The commissioner says the league would start paying its players on June 1 — the normal date when players were scheduled to be getting paid. The logistics of paying players still being worked out with the union as far as logistics go on pay.
