Resistance is mounting against the recent legislation passed in Quebec that aims to regulate the work of family doctors.
A gathering of family physicians in Montreal on Monday openly opposed Bill 106, arguing that it will adversely affect the level of care patients can expect to receive.
“This situation is incredibly frustrating for us as we strive to provide the best possible care with the resources available to us,” expressed Dr. Nacim Kerouch, a family doctor at GMF-U Maisonneuve-Rosemont.
As per the new law, the health minister intends to tie doctors’ salaries to their performance to encourage them to attend to a larger number of patients.
“We all give our utmost effort, so being labeled as lazy is disheartening. Do you truly believe we are lazy individuals? We endured medical school,” emphasized Dr. Sarah Giraldeau, the medical director of GMF-U Maisonneuve-Rosemont.
The family doctors partnered with Quebec Solidaire MNAs to publicly criticize Bill 106 on Monday, expressing concerns that they may be compelled to reduce the time spent with each patient.
“It is impractical to adequately attend to a patient in just 10 minutes, as within that short timeframe, the patient can barely articulate their concerns,” Giraldeau explained.
