DES MOINES — Unity Christian of Orange City scored the first 15 points of the game and cruised to a 58-42 win over Clear Lake in a Class 3A girls state basketball semifinal Thursday afternoon, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. Unity Christian finished the first quarter outscoring the Lions 22-6, with that 16 point spread being the final margin of the game. Clear Lake coach Bart Smith says unfortunately his team came out flat to start the game.

Smith loses five seniors to graduation and says they were an integral part of Clear Lake’s success the last four years.

Kaitlyn VanderPloeg led Clear Lake with 12 points and six rebounds, as the Lions finish their season with a 19-2 record. Unity Christian advances to Saturday morning’s championship game, where they will face fourth-seeded West Lyon, who knocked off the top seed Cherokee 52-39 in Thursday’s other Class 3A semifinal.

IOWA CITY — Jordan Bohannon hit eight of Iowa’s 16 three pointers as the 5th-ranked Hawkeyes crushed Nebraska 102-64, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Bohannon finished with a game-high 26 points.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Bohannon hit four straight from distance in the first half as the Hawkeyes built a 22 point lead at the break.

The win was Iowa’s sixth in the last seven games. The Hawkeyes host Wisconsin on Sunday in a game that tips off at 11:30.

 

 

LUBBOCK — Texas Tech shot a sizzling 62 percent and blew the game open in the second half as the 18th ranked Red Raiders posted an 81-54 win over Iowa State. Cyclone coach Steve Prohm.

Iowa State shot only 31 percent for the game.

Iowa State is 0-17 in the Big 12 and Saturday’s game at Kansas State is their last chance to avoid a winless conference season.

 

ST. LOUIS — Austin Phyfe scored 21 points as UNI beat Illinois State 65-60 in the play-in round at the Missouri Valley Tournament in St. Louis. It was the Panthers’ third win over the Redbirds in less than a week.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson. The Panthers play second seed Drake in tonight’s quarterfinals. The Bulldogs won both regular season games.

 

AMES — The Mason City high school hockey club advanced to today’s quarterfinals of the Midwest High School Hockey League tournament with a 5-3 win over the Quad Cities in Ames on Thursday. After scoring the first goal, the Mohawks fell behind 3-1 but scored four straight times to finish the game. Nik Howell had a hat trick with Sam Butler and Dominic Despenas scoring the other goals. Mohawk coach Brad Bissig says his team is playing well.

Mason City faces Dubuque in today’s quarterfinal round. Dubuque swept Mason City in a two-game series back in early January in Dubuque. Bissig says they will face a tough challenge this afternoon.

MASON CITY — Willmar beat the North Iowa Bulls last night 4-2 at the Mason City Multi-Purpose Arena. North Iowa heads to Willmar for a two-game weekend series starting on Saturday.

 

MASON CITY — The NIACC volleyball team dropped a five-set match to 5th-ranked Iowa Central at home last night, the Tritons winning 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-7. NIACC was led by freshman Grace Tobin with 20 kills and 17 digs. It was the fifth match this season that Tobin has accumulated at least 20 kills. NIACC is now 6-6 overall and in the conference and will travel to Southwestern on Sunday
