There are currently twenty wildfires actively burning in Saskatchewan, with containment achieved for only five of them.
Evacuation orders have been issued by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) for the following communities: Pelican Narrows McIlveena Mine Site, Hall Lake, Brabant Lake, Lower Fishing Lake, Piprell Lake, East Trout Lake, and Little Bear Lake.
Pre-evacuation alerts are in place for Candle Lake, Prince Albert, Whiteswan, and Whelan Bay. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare by arranging accommodations, ensuring vehicles are ready for travel, and putting together an emergency travel kit.
The Canadian Red Cross is actively assisting evacuees by providing accommodations.
According to the organization, “In response to a request from Lac La Ronge Indian Band, and in collaboration with the Prince Albert Grand Council and Indigenous Services Canada, the Canadian Red Cross is aiding individuals and families displaced by wildfires in northern Saskatchewan from Hall Lake, Sikachu Lake, and Clam Bridge.”
The Red Cross is facilitating registration, reception, temporary housing, and personal services for those affected.
For individuals evacuated from Pelican Narrows, the Red Cross is managing shelter and transportation arrangements at the Saskatoon Inn.
With various fire bans and restrictions in place throughout the province, the provincial government advises checking with local authorities before starting any campfires.
Individuals found violating provincial fire bans may face significant fines and potential jail time under The Wildfire Act.
