The province is financing the growth and modernization of the local airport in Virden, Manitoba.

The Manitoba government has announced funding for the rehabilitation and expansion of a small airport in southwest Manitoba.

Glen Simard, Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations, revealed that $1.65 million will be allocated to the Virden Regional Airport. This investment will enable the airport to accommodate commercial and medical flights, including the STARS Air Ambulance service.

In a statement, Simard emphasized the significance of this funding in promoting regional development and employment opportunities in Westman.

He commended the Town of Virden for their dedication, stating that the grant will boost the airport’s capabilities, facilitate commercial growth, and reinforce its crucial role as a hub for medical services, economic progress, and regional connectivity.

Bruce Dunning, Town Counsellor and Chair of the Virden Airport Commission, described the funding as a major achievement for the airport.

The Manitoba Growth, Renewal, and Opportunities for Municipalities Program is the source of funding for this initiative. The upgrades will include a new Automated Weather Observing System, as well as support for around-the-clock medical transfers and charter services.
