WEST DES MOINES — The top-ranked 4A baseball team has had their season shut down by COVID-19. Dowling athletic officials confirmed on Wednesday that a member of the coaching staff had tested positive for the virus. The test initially came back negative, but Wednesday morning word was received that the test was actually positive. Dowling athletic director Tom Wilson released a statement saying that they were following Polk County health protocols and suspending play for all levels of Dowling baseball and softball effective immediately, and due to the timeframe, it makes it necessary to end the seasons of each team. Dowling had played a doubleheader against Ankeny on Tuesday night after being given approval to play due to the initial negative test result for the coach.

CEDAR FALLS —- Northern Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben Jacobson says two of his players tested positive for COVID-19. The UNI athletic department reported seven positive tests late last week.

Jacobson says both players feel great and are set to return to voluntary workouts. He says it is critical for the players to remain cautious.

ST. LOUIS — Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin says if the basketball season began today, he would not feel comfortable with league teams playing games. Elgin says league officials are looking at various options to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elgin says some difficult decisions are coming in the next few weeks.

One of the biggest issues will be establishing testing protocols for all sports.

Elgin says like nearly everyone in college athletics the Valley took a large financial hit from the loss of the NCAA basketball tournament.
