Several inches of snow possible in New York City

New York City is finally getting a shot at some real snowfall in the first week of January, all thanks to a disturbance in the polar vortex.

Arctic air is set to make its way into the United States in the first two weeks of January, bringing below-average temperatures to several regions, including New York City.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the possibility of a winter storm that could bring accumulating snow to New York City, as freezing temperatures are expected in the forecast.

According to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva, the city may be affected by the latest storm between January 6 and 7.

An upcoming winter storm is projected to bring snow to New York City on Monday, January 6, 2025, according to an AccuWeather graphic. The forecast track indicates the potential impact of the storm.

DaSilva stated that there will be an abundance of cold air present.

DaSilva added that there is a possibility for New York to receive a few inches of snow as the storm passes through the area.

The amount of snow accumulation in the five boroughs will ultimately depend on the final track of the storm.

According to DaSilva, the current situation presents two possibilities for New York. Either the storm will miss the city due to suppression in the south, resulting in no significant impact.

Alternatively, if the storm shifts slightly north, it is likely to bring snow due to the cold temperatures. DaSilva also mentioned that if all the necessary factors align, there is a potential for several inches of snowfall on January 6 and 7.

According to DaSilva, if the snow heads towards the city, it could start coming down as early as the afternoon of January 6th. The snowfall may then continue into the next day and even extend into January 8th.
