CEDAR FALLS — Three state football champions were crowned on Thursday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls and three more championship trophies will be handed out today:

DES MOINES — — Three north-central Iowa seniors have been named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s All-State Elite volleyball team. Danielle Johnson and Paige Kisley of Osage led the Green Devils to the Class 3A state title, while Morgan Middleton of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows led the Cowgirls into the 3A state tournament. Johnson was named as the Class 3A player of the year. She along with Kisley and teammate Ellie Bobinet were named to the Class 3A all-state first team. Middleton was also named to the first team with teammate Jadyn Jondle named to the second team. Osage’s Meredith Street was named as an honorable mention selection.

CEDAR FALLS — The UNI men’s basketball team will open against West Virginia on November 25th at a tournament in Sioux Falls. The Panthers were originally scheduled to take part in a tournament in Nebraska but instead replaced Texas A&M in the Sioux Falls event.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson, who says there was some uncertainty over who their second opponent at the Nebraska event would be. The Panthers will play three games in Sioux Falls.

Returning Missouri Valley player of the year AJ Green says a key will be preparing to play knowing the schedule could change at any point.

UNI’s schedule will also include a game at Wisconsin as well as a home game against Wisconsin-Green Bay.

 

DES MOINES — Drake announced Thursday there will be no fans allowed in the Knapp Center for Bulldog home games at least at the start of the season. Only family members will be on hand. Drake’s home opener is December third against Nebraska-Omaha.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries who has averaged 22 wins his first two seasons as head coach. During that time the school has worked hard to build its fan base.

The Bulldogs open the season at Kansas State on November 25th.
