CHARLES CITY — Quad Cities native Madison Keys, who is currently ranked in the top 25 in women’s professional tennis, is coming to north-central Iowa next month as part of a special event marking the 20th year of the All-Iowa Lawn Tennis Club near Charles City. Keys, who was a finalist in the US Open in 2017, will be playing an exhibition against another member of the Women’s Tennis Association at the club on July 15th, a day after holding a junior tennis clinic and mental health panel at the Clear Lake Athletic & Wellness Center. Keys is looking forward to promoting the game of tennis at a unique facility.

Keys says it’s important to get kids more interested in tennis.

Keys started an organization called “Kindness Wins”, which she says is aimed at spreading more kindness throughout the world.

Keys says addressing mental health issues involving athletes has come to the forefront in the last couple of years.

The All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club is one of a handful of grass tennis court facilities in the United States. Tickets for the tennis exhibition are available at www.courtofdreams.org. All proceeds benefit the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club Foundation and Kindness Wins.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota’s Luis Arraez, Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa became the seventh trio of teammates to open a game with three straight home runs, starting a barrage of five long balls in 2 1/3 innings against New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. Arraez started the spree on a 2-2 changeup, hitting a tying drive 396 feet into the right-field seats. Buxton drove the next pitch, a hanging slider, 422 deep into the left-field upper deck. Correa fouled off a pitch, then pulled a cutter 413 feet into the left-field lower deck. That though was not enough as the Twins dropped the deciding game of the series 10-7 to the Yankees.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Catcher Gary Sánchez and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a $9 million, one-year contract. The deal avoids an arbitration hearing that had been scheduled for next week. The agreement was at the midpoint of the $9.5 million Sánchez had asked for and the $8.5 million offered by the Twins. Sánchez hit .204 with 23 homers and 54 RBIs last year for the New York Yankees. They traded him to the Twins on March 13 along with infielder Gio Urshela for third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt. Sánchez has a .224 batting average, seven homers and 27 RBIs this season.

NEW ORLEANS — Former UNI star, Clear Lake native and Newman alum Trevor Penning says it is about learning the offense as he gets ready for his rookie season in New Orleans. The Saints selected Penning in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Penning says getting the offense down will help once training camp begins.

Penning was asked if he believes he will be the starter at left tackle.

Penning was the 19th overall selection of the NFL Draft

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Former Iowa player Matt Gatens is leaving the Drake basketball staff to return to the Hawkeyes as an assistant. Gatens replaces the retiring Kirk Speraw.
