Overnight crash kills 4 in Kaufman County

Four people tragically lost their lives in a devastating crash on Interstate 20 near FM 741 in Mesquite overnight.

Four people tragically lost their lives in a devastating overnight crash in Kaufman County, Texas.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Interstate 20 near FM 741 in Mesquite.

According to law enforcement, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) had stopped on the shoulder of the highway due to a flat tire.

As the tire needed changing, four individuals were assisting outside the vehicle. Unfortunately, they were struck by another driver.

The driver, Basilio Mares Ortiz, 35, veered off the road and ended up in a ditch.

Four individuals in the disabled SUV tragically lost their lives at the scene.

The individuals involved in the incident have been named as Arturo Martinez Gonzalez (47 years old), Anthony Hernandez (19 years old), Mario Guajardo De La Paz (19 years old), and a 15-year-old male, all from Terrell.

Ortiz was taken into custody by the police and faced charges for four counts of intoxication manslaughter.
