‘Democrats do live in Oklahoma’: State legislators attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention

A group of Oklahoma lawmakers is currently representing the Sooner State at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago.

Two lawmakers expressed their enthusiasm about being involved in what they believe will be an eventful week for the Democratic party.

Oklahoma House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson (D-OKC) took a moment to chat with Fox 25 before heading into the DNC at the United Center.

“I am extremely proud to represent the great state of Oklahoma and want to remind the entire country that Democrats not only reside here but also actively participate in the democratic process,” Munson proudly stated. “We exercise our right to vote and have the privilege of being elected into office.”

Attending an event like this is a completely new experience for the first Asian-American woman elected to the state legislature.

“It is truly inspiring for me to witness the candidacy of a woman running for president once again, particularly an Asian-American woman. A woman of color who wholeheartedly embraces her identity and showcases the limitless potential that lies within. This serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact we can achieve when we prioritize the well-being of families and invest in the future of our children.”

Senator Carri Hicks from Oklahoma City is attending her first ever Democratic National Convention.

“It has been a transformative experience for me to be surrounded by fellow elected Democrats from states across the political spectrum,” Senator Hicks expressed. “We have engaged in deep conversations about our common goal of revitalizing the middle class and providing renewed optimism to our hardworking families. I am eager to see this momentum carry forward in Oklahoma. Connecting with other minority leaders from different states has been truly inspiring, as it has shed light on the challenges and obstacles Democrats face while being in the minority.”

Lawmakers from North Dakota, Ohio, and Kansas are closely monitoring the developments in Oklahoma, according to Hicks.

Other state lawmakers have been commenting on the current state of our public education system, and it has been quite interesting to hear their perspectives. The fact that these headlines have reached national coverage is concerning to many Democrats, as it indicates that things have veered far off track in Oklahoma. Fortunately, we have been able to engage in meaningful discussions about what steps we need to take in order to restore order and ensure the well-being of our students.

Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd, along with State Representatives Regina Goodwin (D-Tulsa), Mickey Dollens (D-Oklahoma City), Amanda Swope (D-Tulsa), and Arturo Alonso Sandoval (D-Oklahoma City), are also present at the DNC.
