CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake boys rallied from 15 points down in the second half to edge Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 48-47 last night in Clear Lake, as you heard on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB. The Lions were down 39-28 at the end of three quarters but wore out the Cardinals, who were only able to score eight points in the fourth quarter while the Lions rolled up 20 in the final frame. Tate Storbeck had 14 points while Zach Lester had 10 to lead Clear Lake, as the Lions improve to 16-4 overall and will host Webster City in their regular season finale on Tuesday. Garner-Hayfield-Ventura was led by James Betz with 19 and Nick Joynt with 16. The Cardinals start 2A district play on Thursday.

 

IOWA CITY — The Iowa women shot 67 percent from the field in the first half (20 of 30), built an 18-point lead in the third quarter, and held on to win its third game in a row, 80-76, over Penn State in front of 5,878 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last night. It snapped Iowa’s three-game losing skid against the Nittany Lions, dating back to a 77-52 win Dec. 28, 2014, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Junior Megan Gustafson poured in a game-high 33 points on 13 of 19 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 from the line. She grabbed 14 rebounds and handed out a career-high seven assists. Mason City native Makenzie Meyer only score four points in 35 minutes of play but made two key free throws in the final minutes of play.

Iowa improves to 19-6 overall, 7-5 in the Big Ten, Penn State is 14-11, 5-7.

 

 

MASON CITY — District wrestling tournaments take place tomorrow in all three classes, with the top two wrestlers from each district advancing to the state tournament starting next Thursday in Des Moines.

== At the Class 2A meet at Parkersburg, top-ranked New Hampton-Turkey Valley advanced 12 wrestlers to districts from last week’s sectional meet. Clear Lake had 10 wrestlers in the district tournament. Also from the area at Parkersburg will be Osage and Charles City each with seven, and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura with one.

== At the 1A meet in Manson, Lake Mills has the most wrestlers who advanced from sectionals with nine, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayshire and Emmetsburg have eight, while Eagle Grove has seven. Also from the area, West Hancock has four, Newman and Belmond-Klemme have three, while West Fork has one.

== At the 1A at Decorah, Denver has the most qualifiers with 10, while South Winneshiek has nine. Among the area teams, Central Springs, Nashua-Plainfield, and North Butler-Clarksville each have four, Rockford and St. Ansgar each have two, while Notrhwood-Kensett and Riceville each have one.

== Mason City will be at the 3A district meet at Cedar Rapids Prairie. Among the teams there include Waverly-Shell Rock, Marshalltown, Marion as well as the Cedar Rapids schools of Jefferson, Kennedy, Washington and Prairie.
