On July 25th of every year, National Hire a Veteran Day is celebrated. In honor of this day, Governor Glenn Youngkin has emphasized the importance of hiring military veterans to fill job positions. The occasion serves as a reminder to employers to consider veterans when looking for skilled and dedicated workers. Portsmouth, VA is no exception to this call to action.

According to Youngkin, Virginia boasts of nearly 700,000 military veterans, which is one of the highest veteran populations per capita in the United States. Additionally, over 20,000 active-duty service members stationed in Virginia are transitioning to civilian life.

Youngkin emphasized the importance of veterans in Virginia’s workforce, stating that they are a valuable asset to the state’s economy. He believes that veterans’ skills and dedication make Virginia an attractive destination for new industries, advanced technology projects, and national security-related businesses. According to Youngkin, companies that prioritize the recruitment and retention of veterans tend to outperform their competitors. His goal is to ensure that veterans have a bright future in the Commonwealth and continue to contribute to the state’s success.

Back in 2017, a former Marine Corps veteran and the founder of Hire Our Heroes, Dan Caporale, initiated National Hire a Veteran Day. The prime objective of this day was to inspire employers throughout the nation to recruit the individuals who have previously served in the military. Furthermore, it aimed to encourage veterans to consider civilian jobs as they make the transition to civilian life.
