Confidence is increasing that Missouri is likely to experience a significant snow event this weekend, although there are still uncertainties about the specific type of weather that will occur.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis is urging residents to be prepared for potentially severe weather this weekend in Missouri.

There is growing consensus among forecast models that a significant portion of the state will experience heavy snowfall.

Before diving into the latest model predictions, let’s first look at the official statement from the National Weather Service regarding what is currently known and what remains uncertain about the approaching winter storm.

What do the new runs of the computer models show for Missouri’s winter storm?

Max Velocity recently shared on YouTube the latest GFS model runs, which indicate that snow is expected to start on Sunday morning throughout most of Missouri. Additionally, it appears that the southern region of the state may experience freezing rain and/or ice.

The video, shared by Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center on YouTube, shows heavy snowfall in Missouri over the weekend.

What we don’t know about the winter storm for Missouri

The exact path and amount of snow that Missouri will experience remain uncertain. The outcome largely depends on the position of the low pressure system.

Despite the multitude of unknown factors, it is advisable to heed the recommendations of the National Weather Service. It is prudent to prepare for the worst-case scenario and have an alternative plan in place for travel within the state on Sunday and possibly extending into Monday.

The National Weather Service may release an official forecast and issue warnings as early as Thursday, January 2, 2025.
