A new $25 million transload facility is underway in Perry County, Mississippi, marking a significant investment by a local poultry processor. This development is poised to bring substantial economic benefits and create jobs in the community.
The initial phase of the project focuses on supplying grain to Mar-Jac’s Mississippi growers, leading to the creation of over 20 new jobs. The broader economic impact is projected to exceed $90 million, which will greatly benefit Perry County.
“This opportunity is particularly exciting for Mar-Jac and represents one of our largest undertakings in Mississippi,” said Tanveer Papa, Chief Financial Officer at Mar-Jac. “We initiated this project about three and a half years ago with a vision of its potential for Perry County. Today, we see that vision realized, and we look forward to contributing to this community and its surrounding areas.”
The Perry County location offers Mar-Jac strategic advantages in transportation, including rail access on-site, which will help mitigate the high costs associated with transporting grain to local growers. This efficiency could potentially lower costs for consumers of the end products.
“This project demonstrates that rural areas with limited resources possess boundless potential when there is collaboration and unified effort,” remarked Shane Barnett, Representative for House District 86, Mississippi. He expressed gratitude to all involved, including local and state officials, community leaders, and stakeholders, for their roles in bringing this project to fruition.
The ceremony, held at the Perry County Board of Supervisors office, marks the initiation of Mar-Jac’s extensive growth strategy in the county. Once the transload facility is complete, Mar-Jac plans to expand its investment in the region by establishing a feed mill.
“Our company places great importance on our dedication to the local communities where we operate,” stated Keith Poss, Director of Transportation at Mar-Jac Poultry. “We are deeply committed to the well-being of our employees, customers, and community. Our aim is to build a lasting partnership with Perry County, requiring a comprehensive commitment from start to finish to achieve that goal.”
