The federal government has recently mandated that American flags must be fully manufactured and produced within the United States, according to sources. This move is expected to boost domestic production of the national symbol and ensure that it meets the highest quality standards.
The new mandate is set to be signed by President Joe Biden in the near future.
Until now, the government was obligated to purchase flags made of at least 50% American-made materials.
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, recently presented the All-American Flag Act. He believes that the bill wasn’t passed earlier due to the influence of corporate interest groups that transfer jobs to China.
According to Brown, it is unacceptable for an American flag to be raised over a military base or any government building that is not completely constructed by American workers. “Whether it’s the Toledo air base or a post office, the American flag should not fly over such establishments,” he emphasized.
According to Brown’s office, China supplied almost all of the 10 million American flags that were imported by the US in 2017, with only 50,000 flags sourced domestically.
Earlier this year, the Ohio House of Representatives approved a bill that would forbid state and local government agencies from purchasing flags of the United States or Ohio that are not manufactured in the U.S. The legislation is currently awaiting hearings in the Senate.
