Alabama Senator Britt Calls for Investigation into Federal Funding of Abortion Providers

U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), along with Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Representatives Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), and 107 other members of Congress, has urged the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to launch an investigation into the federal funding granted to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood Federation of America and International Planned Parenthood Federation in the last three years.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have come together to request updated information regarding the federal funds allocated to various organizations. Specifically, they are seeking details on the financial support provided to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Planned Parenthood affiliates, MSI Reproductive Choices, and four domestic abortion providers. This bipartisan letter demonstrates the shared commitment to transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

“We are writing to request updated information on federal funding for Federally Qualified Health Centers, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, International Planned Parenthood Federation, MSI Reproductive Choices, and other abortion providers,” the letter stated.

The GAO has previously published reports on this subject, which uncovered that the abortion industry was granted almost $2 billion in federal taxpayer dollars between fiscal years 2019-2021. Lawmakers stressed the importance of ensuring transparency in the distribution of public funds.

“Proper oversight of public funds and programs is crucial for determining the value of the goods and services provided to and funded by American taxpayers,” the letter continued. “The information sought in this inquiry is instrumental for policymakers and the public alike.”

The lawmakers expect that the GAO study would throw light on funding levels and increase transparency when Congress reviews government spending and makes future budget decisions.

Senator Britt previously cosponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, presented by Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), which aims to establish a permanent, government-wide standard prohibiting federal funding for abortions.

She has also backed efforts to overturn the Department of Veterans Affairs’ rule allowing abortions at VA facilities in places like Alabama, where such procedures are strictly controlled or prohibited.

The request to the GAO demonstrates lawmakers’ commitment to ensuring accountability and openness in the use of taxpayer resources. The legislators assert that this report will offer crucial insights into funding practices and enhance the public’s comprehension of the use of their tax dollars.
