Buffalo, NY is bracing for a powerful lake-effect snowstorm that is expected to bring heavy accumulations and create dangerous conditions.

Starting Thursday evening, the city is likely to experience snowfall of 18 to 24 inches in the most affected areas by Friday morning. As a result, travel along I-90 and other surrounding roadways will become hazardous.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a warning stating that the regions southeast of Lake Erie will experience the heaviest snow bands tonight, with conditions expected to worsen on Friday morning.

As winds gust up to 35 mph, blowing snow and reduced visibility will pose a significant risk for drivers. It is advised that residents avoid unnecessary travel and make necessary preparations to anticipate potential delays.

On Friday, snow showers will persist throughout the day, particularly in Oswego and Lewis counties, where some areas may accumulate up to two feet of snow.

The temperature will reach a high of 31°F, but with wind chills, it will feel even colder. Moving on to Saturday, there will be some respite as the snowfall becomes lighter, and the temperature reaches around 25°F.

However, the bitter cold winds will persist.

Sunday’s weather forecast predicts cloudy conditions with scattered snow showers throughout the day. However, there is no significant accumulation of snow expected.

Buffalo residents are being urged by officials to stay updated on local information and make sure they have emergency kits ready. If you are planning to travel on I-90, it is important to allow extra time and check for any closures before you set out on your journey
