MASON CITY — Clear Lake won the first six matches and built a 36-0 lead on their way to a 52-21 win over Mason City High last night in a non-conference wrestling dual, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB. The Lions’ 152-pounder Braxton Doebel opened up the dual pinning Riley Monahan in 36 seconds to win his 100th career match. Also picking up pins on the night for Clear Lake were Thomas Gansen at 160, Dylan Kruckenberg at 220, Brian Hillyer at 138 and Eric Faught at 145 pounds. The feature match of the night was at 285 where #2/3A Troy Monahan of Mason City pinned Kade Hambly, the 8th-ranked wrestler at 220 pounds in Class 2A, with one second to go in the third period. Clear Lake now prepares for Saturday’s North Central Conference tournament in Clarion, while Mason City will host Waukee on Thursday night

DES MOINES — The Mason City High boys basketball team has won three in a row. The Mohawks jumped out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and held on for a 78-68 win at Des Moines Roosevelt last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Dylan Miller led four Mason City players in double figure scoring with 19 points. Jeff Skogen added 15, Corey Miner 11 and Carter Thomas had 10. Mason City improves to 4-9 on the season.

=== The Mason City High girls also picked up a win at Roosevelt last night 73-41, as you heard on KGLO. Megan Meyer had 27 points while Jada Whitner added 12. Mason City is now 10-4 overall. Both Mohawk teams will host Southeast Polk on Friday night.

MASON CITY — Both NIACC basketball teams remain ranked in the new junior college Division II polls released on Tuesday. The NIACC women dropped one spot from fourth to fifth in the new rankings. The Lady Trojans beat Iowa Central last Wednesday but dropped a contest on Saturday at Division I Iowa Western. Johnson County Kansas is ranked first, Illinois Central is second, Highland of Kansas is third, Kansas City Kansas Community College is fourth. Kirkwood, which hosts NIACC on Saturday, is ranked 10th in the new poll. The NIACC men dropped one spot to 15th in the new rankings. South Suburban of Illinois remains top-ranked, Highland of Kansas is second, Kirkwood is fourth and Iowa Lakes is 20th. Both NIACC teams travel to DMACC tonight.

 

 

IOWA CITY — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says leading scorer and rebounder Tyler Cook returned to practice Tuesday but he does not know if he will play tonight at Penn State. Cook sprained an ankle in the waning moments of Iowa’s win over 16th ranked Ohio State on Saturday.

McCaffery says the injury is not a severe as the one that caused sophomore center Luka Garza to miss three games.

McCaffery says the Hawkeyes should have confidence they can win without Cook. Their first Big Ten road win at Northwestern came with Cook sidelined with a sore knee.

McCaffery says winning on the road is about defense, rebounding and decision making.

The 23rd ranked Hawkeyes are 3-3 in the Big Ten. Penn State is 0-6. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 o’clock tonight. You can hear the Iowa-Penn State game on AM-1300 KGLO starting with the pre-game at 5 o’clock.

 

 

AMES — The Iowa State Cyclones face a difficult task on tonight when they visit eighth ranked Texas Tech. At 4-0, the Red Raiders are the lone remaining unbeaten in the Big 12.

Iowa State coach Steve Prohm. After opening the league race 2-0 the Cyclones have dropped two straight.

Prohm wants his players to enjoy the challenge.

Tipoff in Lubbock is scheduled for 8 o’clock tonight.

 

 

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid had 31 points and 13 rebounds and the Philadelphia 76ers scored 83 points in the first half in a 149-107 thrashing of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Golden State Warriors were the only team to score more first-half points in a game this season when they dropped 92 on the Chicago Bulls on Oct. 29. Jimmy Butler scored 19 points in his first game against Minnesota since it sent him to the 76ers in a package deal that brought forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric in return.

 

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Jason Zucker scored in a shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. It was Zucker’s first career shootout goal in five tries. Zucker was the only shooter from either team to convert. Nino Niederreiter and Eric Staal scored for the Wild, who had lost their previous two games.

 

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier turned down a more lucrative deal to join what he hopes is a playoff team with the Washington Nationals. The 31-year-old signed a $9 million, one-year contract with Washington that makes him the new second baseman and potentially a bridge from Daniel Murphy to prospect Carter Kieboom. Dozier says other clubs offered him more money and longer deals, but he and his wife opted for the opportunity to win now. Dozier was traded during the 2018 season from the Twins to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
