IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Payton Sandfort finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in the Iowa men’s basketball program’s history as the Hawkeyes breezed to a 90-81 victory over Penn State last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Sandfort, a junior, made 3 of 11 shots with two 3-pointers and 18 of 19 free throws for the Hawkeyes (17-12, 9-9 Big Ten Conference). He also blocked three shots. Josh Dix scored 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting with two 3-pointers. Owen Freeman totaled 11 points and eight rebounds. Tony Perkins pitched in with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Qudus Wahab had 18 points and seven rebounds to pace the Nittany Lions (14-15, 8-10). RayQuawndis Mitchell added 16 points on 6-for-6 shooting off the bench and snagged five rebounds.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Logan Wolf scored 14 points off the bench to spark Northern Iowa to a 68-54 victory over Valparaiso on Tuesday night. Wolf shot 6 of 7 from the floor for the Panthers, who improve to 17-13 overall and 11-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Bowen Born hit two 3-pointers and scored 12. Tytan Anderson added 11 points. Jerome Palm scored 14 to lead the Beacons (6-24, 2-17), who have lost 11 in a row. Jahari Williamson added 13 points. Kasper Sepp contributed nine points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

DES MOINES — The Drake men need to win and get some help as the Bulldogs open the final week of the regular season at Illinois-Chicago tonight. A 91-77 loss at Northern Iowa over the weekend dropped the Bulldogs a game behind Indiana State at 14-4 in the Missouri Valley standings.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries who says the Bulldogs had too many defensive breakdowns against the Panthers.

U-I-C is 4-14 in conference play and 11-18 overall.

AMES — Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger says his 8th-ranked Cyclones have made significant strides since a Big 12 opening loss at Oklahoma. The Cyclones lost to the Sooners 71-63 in early January and the rematch is tonight in Hilton Coliseum.

Otzelberger’s ISU teams have always featured defense and toughness but this team has added balance on offense. Six players are averaging more than eight points or more.

The Cyclones are 10-4 in the Big 12. The Sooners are 7-7.

IOWA CITY — The 6th-ranked Iowa women open the final week of the regular season tonight at Minnesota. The Hawkeyes are 13-3 in the Big Ten and two games behind 2nd-ranked Ohio State. With the post season looming coach Lisa Bluder remains concerned about depth in the post.

Williams Arena is sold out for tonight’s game and the Hawkeyes will return to the Twin Cities next week for the Big Ten Tournament.

That’s senior guard Caitlin Clark. With the Big Ten Tournament already sold out for the first time, the Hawkeyes expect to play in front of pro-Iowa crowds after tonight.

Iowa is 24-4 overall. The Gophers are 5-11 in the Big Ten and 15-12 overall.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, returning from an injury scare right before halftime, and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-105 without All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns missed the game due to personal reasons. Earlier in the day, Towns memorialized a high school teammate on Instagram. Minnesota coach Chris Finch said before the game that he hoped Towns would only miss one game. Rudy Gobert, back after missing a game with a left ankle sprain, added 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Timberwolves in his latest matchup with fellow French countryman Victor Wembanyama, who had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

AMES (AP) — Four former or suspended Iowa State athletes are asking a judge to throw out evidence in a state sports wagering investigation they say was gathered illegally and to dismiss all charges against them. Attorneys for former football players Isaiah Lee, Jirehl Brock and Enyi Uwazurike and suspended wrestler Paniro Johnson on Tuesday filed the motion to suppress in Story County. Defense attorneys reiterated their contention that there was no probable cause for the searches into online wagering activities that resulted in criminal charges and lost NCAA eligibility. The four are among about two dozen Iowa State and Iowa athletes criminally charged. They each face a felony charge of identity theft and an aggravated misdemeanor charge of tampering with records. The Iowa Department of Public Safety has said it believes its methods stand up to legal scrutiny.
