NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom’s record-tying streak of quality starts ended at 26 when he allowed two home runs to Mitch Garver and one to Eddie Rosario in a 14-8 drubbing by the Minnesota Twins, the worst outing in two years for the New York Mets ace. Minnesota hit six homers, including a pair by Jonathan Schoop. The Mets hit four of their own, two by rookie Pete Alonso, as the teams combined for the most home runs in a game at Citi Field, which opened a decade ago.

MASON CITY – NIACC sisters Kaci and Kylie Sherwood both won Iowa Community College Athletic Conference player of the week honors for the week of April 1-7.

Kaci shared player of the week honors with Southwestern’s Ali Enright and Kylie shared pitcher of the week honors with Kirkwood’s Erin Hocker.

Kaci, a sophomore, hit .560 in eight games last week, including two doubles and three home runs. She now has 15 career home runs, which ranks third on the school’s career list.

Kylie, a freshman, was 2-1 last week for the No. 7 Lady Trojans. She tossed a five-inning perfect game against Iowa Central in a 12-0 victory on April 1 and threw a five-inning no-hitter against Northeast Community College on April 6.

MASON CITY – The NIACC softball team is ranked seventh in the latest NJCAA Division II poll released Tuesday.

Jones County Junior College of Mississippi (25-4) is ranked No. 1.

DMACC is ranked fourth, Kirkwood is ranked sixth and Iowa Central is ranked ninth.

NIACC (16-8 overall, 8-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) was ranked 20th in last week’s poll. The Lady Trojans were 6-2 last week with three wins over Iowa Central and one win over Kirkwood.

IOWA CITY — The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team looks to make some noise on the road this week beginning with tonight’s game at Bradley. The Hawkeyes are 11-3 at home this season but just 5-8 on the road. They will be at Purdue this weekend in Big Ten play.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller who says the home team wins nearly 68 percent of the time in college baseball.

Heller says travel is one factor and another is the variety in types of fields and dimensions.

Iowa is 18-12 overall.

CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake and Lake Mills both won six events but it was the Lions edging the Bulldogs for the team title at the Lions Relays boys track meet in Clear Lake last night. Nick Danielson, Jagger Schmitt and Justin Wright each had three first place finishes last night. Danielson won the 100, Schmitt the 400, Wright the 800, with all three joining Austin Warnke as being a part of the 800 sprint medley relay. Warnke and Wright joined Carson Odor and Tanner Reimann as part of the winning distance medley relay squad. Lake Mills won five of the seven relay events, placing first in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800, and the shuttle hurdle relay. For Clear Lake it was the first time they won their own Lions Relays since 2002. The Lions are scheduled to travel to Forest City on Thursday.

ANKENY — Ankeny scored four goals in the second half to beat Mason City 6-2 in boys soccer last night. Jacob Wolf and David Johnson each scored goals for the Mohawks in the loss. Mason City is 1-1 for the season and will host Ames on Friday night.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points and the Toronto Raptors closed their regular season with a 120-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. Fred VanVleet scored 16 points, and Chris Boucher had a career-high 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Raptors, who finished the regular season at 58-24.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Bruce Boudreau will be back on the bench next season for Minnesota, despite the team’s first absence from the playoffs in seven years. Boudreau says he hadn’t broached his future with Wild general manager Paul Fenton until a reporter asked the boss about the coach’s job status while they sat next to each other at the podium for their season-ending news conference. Boudreau has one year left on his contract, but Fenton says he’s “sure” he will speak to him eventually about an extension.

AMES — With Hakeem Butler heading to the NFL a new group of receivers is expected to step up at Iowa State. Senior Deshaunte Jones was second on the team in receptions last season with 43.

Jones says 2018 was a breakout year for him.

Jones says his career has gone by quickly.

Redshirt sophomore Tarique Milton had 34 catches a year ago and says he learned a great deal from Butler.

Milton says his biggest area of improvement has been in the ability to read defenses.

Spring drills for Iowa State will conclude on April 20th, with this year’s spring schedule not including a spring football game.
