Van fire closes interstate near Clear Lake due to exploding ammunition

CLEAR LAKE — An accident shut down a portion of Interstate 35 near Clear Lake on Monday afternoon due to exploding ammunition.

The Clear Lake Fire Department says they were called shortly after 3 o’clock to the 191 mile marker on the interstate’s southbound lanes on the report of the accident.

The Clear Lake Police Department and Iowa State Patrol shut down the southbound lanes prior to the Fire Department’s arrival due to a full-sized van being fully involved in fire with the report of exploding ammunition inside the vehicle.

The Fire Department says they were able to quickly extinguish the fire and were on the scene for about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
