Urbandale man taken to the hospital after snowmobile accident on Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE — An Urbandale man was taken to the hospital after a snowmobile accident on Clear Lake last night.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department says at about 6:55 PM, the Clear Lake Police Department received a call about a vehicle possibly in the water on the lake. During a search by authorities near the aerator open water system near City Park, deputies were notified of a missing snowmobiler who was unfamiliar with the lake. During the search, the driver of the snowmobile was able to rescue himself and get to shore.

38-year-old David Mapes was picked up and transported to a residence, where Clear Lake paramedics responded and evaluated him and then transported him to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for possible hypothermia. Mapes had no other injuries as a result of the accident. The snowmobile remains in the lake at this time until arrangements can be made to have it removed.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is continuing their investigation into the accident.
