CEDAR FALLS — Clear Lake native and Newman alum Trevor Penning has been named the University of Northern Iowa’s first Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week this season. The redshirt junior’s performance Saturday helped UNI top 6th-ranked South Dakota State. The Panthers notched 16 first downs. UNI had 103 rushing yards, compared to SDSU’s 60 yards. UNI added 232 in passing yards. The UNI offense allowed for wide receiver Isaiah Weston to have a 125-yard receiving game. UNI converted on four third-down attempts and recorded more than 34 minutes of possession.

CEDAR FALLS — The UNI Panthers are up to 17th in the latest FCS coaches poll. The Panthers snapped a two game losing skid with a victory at 6th-ranked South Dakota State. They host 3rd-ranked Southern Illinois on Saturday.

That’s UNI coach Mark Farley. Sophomore quarterback Nic Baker leads a Saluki offense that is scoring nearly 38 points per game.

The Salukis are tied at the top of the Missouri Valley standings with a 4-0 record. The rest of the league already has two or more losses. Farley says there is a lot of balance in the league.

The Panthers are 4-3 overall.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brandon Ingram scored 27 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 22 points and 23 rebounds, and the New Orleans Pelicans snapped a three-game season-opening losing streak with a 107-98 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday night. Devonte’ Graham added 21 points as New Orleans, which was once again without injured star Zion Williamson. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 17 points for the Pelicans, who saw a 21-point lead cut to four points late in the third quarter. Anthony Edwards scored 21 of his 28 points in the third period to spark Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns added 32 points and 14 rebounds.
