IOWA CITY — Iowa sophomore forward Jack Nunge is expected to miss the Hawkeyes season opener on Wednesday against North Carolina Central. Nunge’s father Mark died over the weekend.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says Nunge is with his family in Indiana.

Tipoff for Wednesday’s game is scheduled for just after 3 o’clock with the pre-game starting at 2 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO

CEDAR FALLS — A schedule change at the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls means the UNI men will have a new opponent for Wednesday’s opening round. The Panthers will now play Western Kentucky after being originally scheduled to play West Virginia. The Panthers have three starters back from a team that won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title but several young players will be counted on for significant minutes.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson, who says the young players will be counted on to provide depth.

Tipoff on Wednesday is scheduled for 3:30

DES MOINES — Drake is motivated by low expectations as they get set to open the season Wednesday afternoon at Kansas State. The Bulldogs are picked to finish in the lower half of the Missouri Valley Conference and one of the reasons is the loss of center Liam Robbins. The Davenport native transferred to Minnesota after a sophomore season in which he averaged more than 14 points and seven rebounds in being named All-Valley.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries who feels the Bulldogs have become an established program. They posted 24 wins and 20 wins in his first two years as coach.

Tipoff Wednesday is scheduled for 1 o’clock.

AMES — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says Texas always has tremendous talent and this season is no different. The 15th-ranked Cyclones visit the Longhorns on Friday looking to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title.

Campbell says the Texas offense led by senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger will be a challenge.

ISU will be in search of its first conference title since sharing the Missouri Valley Conference championship back in 1912. Campbell says a key for the Cyclones this season has been consistent improvement.

Kickoff on Friday is scheduled for 11:00 AM

MASON CITY — The North Iowa Bulls were scheduled to travel to Sauk Rapids Minnesota to face Granite City in NA3HL action this Saturday, but the Bulls’ coach Todd Sanden says his team’s schedule is up in the air right now with the state of Minnesota pausing play for the NA3HL teams in the state.

Sanden says he’s contacted league officials with the intent of playing this weekend no matter the opponent.

Sanden says the NA3HL says they’ll find a way to keep the Bulls playing despite the Minnesota shutdown.

The other teams in the Bulls division are also in Minnesota and impacted by the shutdown, with those teams being in Alexandria, Willmar and New Ulm.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Chicago White Sox will host the New York Yankees in the rescheduled Field of Dreams game at Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 12. MLB says the plan is tentative, contingent on the status of public health next summer. The teams had been scheduled to play at the ballpark next to the “Field of Dreams” movie site last Aug. 13. When the schedule was revamped because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Yankees were replaced as the opponent by the St. Louis Cardinals, but the game was called off on Aug. 4. The rescheduled game will be MLB’s first in Iowa.
