DES MOINES — Clear Lake shut down Waukon in the final three quarters, holding the Indians to 12 points after the first quarter in a 45-24 victory in the Class 3A girls state basketball quarterfinals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines last night, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. The second-ranked Lions held Waukon to three field goals in the last three quarters and handcuffed Waukon’s leading scorer Annika Headington to only four points. Clear Lake coach Bart Smith credited his team’s quality defense led by senior Ali Maulsby and junior Emily Theiss.
After 9-of-24 shooting in the first half, Smith says they took advantage of a defensive switch by Waukon to start the second half, resulting in the Lions going 10-of-21 from the field after halftime.
Kaitlyn VanderPloeg had 12 points and six rebounds while Darby Dodd added 11 points and six rebounds for the Lions. Clear Lake will now face the winner of this morning’s game between Unity Christian of Orange City and Roland-Story in the 3A semifinals at 4:00 PM on Thursday afternoon.

Video of the incident went viral Saturday afternoon. Johnson issued an apology for his actions. He is in his first season on the Penguin staff.
