COLLINS — Despite striking out 18 times, Newman’s offense was able to advance the Knights to the state softball tournament as they beat 4th-ranked Collins-Maxwell 4-2 in the Class 1A Region 4 championship game in Collins last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. Avah Hanig had a two-run double in the second to get the Knights on the board first, and after Collins-Maxwell got a run back in the fourth, Liz Kruckenberg had a two-run single that turned out to be the winning runs. Collins-Maxwell was able to push across a run in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded. Newman coach Tom Dunn says it’s great to take another team back to the state tournament.

Dunn says his offense was able to come through despite 18 strikeouts by Collins-Maxwell sophomore pitcher Erica Houge.

Newman will be the eighth seed in the state tournament and face top-seed North Linn next Tuesday at 5 o’clock in the Class 1A state quarterfinals, a game you’ll hear on AM-1300 KGLO.

MANLY — For the eighth straight year, Central Springs is headed back to the state softball tournament after a 10-0, five-inning win over Top of Iowa Conference rival Osage in the Class 2A Region 5 championship game last night in Manly. Cooper Klaahsen fired a no-hitter, striking out 11 and allowing only a hit batsman. Kaylea Fesler and Madisyn Kelley each had two runs batted in to lead the Panthers, who are now 31-1 on the season and are the top seed in the 2A state tournament. They’ll face 8th-seed Mt. Ayr in the 2A quarterfinals next Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, a game you’ll hear on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com.

ANKENY — Ankeny Centennial pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Mason City 2-1 in a Class 4A Substate 2 semifinal baseball game last night in Ankeny, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. Mason City ends their season with a record of 22-18.

 

 

CLARION — Class 1A and 2A substate baseball championship games take place tonight:

== In the Class 1A Substate 2 championship game in Clarion, 2nd-ranked Newman faces Top of Iowa Conference rival Bishop Garrigan. The Knights are 31-3 and beat Garrigan 12-3 back on June 28th in Algona in their lone regular-season meeting. You can hear the Newman-Bishop Garrigan game tonight on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com starting at 7 o’clock

== In the Class 2A Substate 3 championship game at Roosevelt Field in Mason City, Osage faces 7th-ranked Dike-New Hartford. The Green Devils are 20-4 after beating Forest City 9-2 in the district final on Saturday, while Dike-New Hartford is 25-3 after edging Grundy Center in the district finals 4-3. First pitch at Roosevelt Field is scheduled for 7 o’clock.

 

 

 

IOWA CITY — Iowa football players say while summer workouts may focus more on individual and position development, it is a crucial period for developing a team. Senior linebacker Jack Campbell.

Campbell says while full pads and 11-on-11 work is not allowed, it is a time to get ready for preseason camp.

Senior tight end Sam LaPorta is trying to relay to the younger players just how quickly a college career goes.

LaPorta says summer workouts are designed as a transition to preseason camp.

Senior receiver Nico Ragaini says it is an important time for the incoming freshmen.

The Hawkeyes open the season at home on September 3rd against South Dakota State.
