MASON CITY – The 18th-ranked NIACC volleyball team cruised to a three sets to nothing Iowa Community College Athletic Conference victory over Iowa Lakes on sophomore night in the NIACC gym.

NIACC won 25-9, 25-13, 25-8 to improve its overall record to 29-8 and league mark to 7-1.

Before Wednesday’s match, NIACC coach Chris Brandt honored sophomores Tessa Sienknecht, Kennedy Meister, Sarah Goodrich, Kayla Lentz, Shelby Heston, Alexa Loftus, Taylor Gerdes, Sarah Kimberly, Braylee Wood and manager Zach Johnson.

NIACC remains atop the conference with its 7-1 mark, tied with Iowa Central, who beat Northeast Community College on Wednesday night.

The 29 wins by the Lady Trojans is the most by a NIACC volleyball team since the 1996 team was 29-13.

NIACC returns to action tonight at home against the Wartburg College Junior Varsity on Think Pink Night. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.

IOWA CITY — With top receiver Brandon Smith sidelined Iowa’s running game will need to pick up some slack at Northwestern. After totaling 71 yards in losses to Michigan and Penn State the ground game showed signs of life with 102 yards in a win over Purdue. Junior running back Mehki Sargent.

It has not come easy against the Wildcats. The Hawkeyes managed only 64 yards in a 14-10 loss a year ago and tallied only 89 yards two years ago in a 17-10 overtime loss in Evanston.

That’s Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley. Sophomore safety Jack Koerner says the Hawkeyes are more focused on their three game losing streak in the series and not Northwestern’s 1-5 record.

Kickoff on Saturday in Evanston is scheduled for 11 o’clock, with the pre-game at 9 o’clock on KGLO

AMES — Sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy leads an Iowa State offense that ranks 15th nationally heading into Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State. The Cyclones are 5-2 and are averaging just over 40 points during their current three game winning streak.

Purdy says he is trying to keep things simple.

Kickoff in Ames on Saturday is scheduled for 2:30

DES MOINES — Drake basketball coach Darian DeVries feels the Bulldog program has a lot of momentum heading into the new season. In his first season as coach DeVries led a team with 11 new players to a 24-10 record and a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.

DeVries says there are a lot of benefits to winning immediately.

There are six new players on this team and Devries says there is a lot more depth.

DeVries says they may get senior forward Tremell Murphy back at some point. Murphy was charged last month for his part in an accidental shooting at his off-campus home.

Clinton native and 6-10 senior Brady Ernst is not practicing right now. The transfer from Florida Gulf Coast underwent off-season knee and back surgery.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving scored 50 points in a record-setting Nets debut, but lost his balance and missed a potential winning shot in overtime that allowed the Minnesota Timberwolves to pull out a 127-126 victory over Brooklyn. Karl-Anthony Towns had 36 points and 14 rebounds for Minnesota, and Andrew Wiggins finished with 21 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:19 remaining.
