CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake scored multiple runs in all but one inning as they beat Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 17-7 in six innings in a Class 3A Region 4 quarterfinal round softball contest, as you heard on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB. The Lions scored twice in the first and third innings, four times each in the second and fourth, and finished the game with a five-run sixth inning. Julia Merfeld was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Sara Faber and Kaylee Nosbich were both 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Bella Parker was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Clear Lake improves to 10-14 on the season and will travel to Waterloo on Friday to face 6th-ranked Columbus, who beat Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 11-1 in five innings last night. On the other side of the 3A Region 4 bracket, New Hampton used an eight-run sixth inning to beat Forest City 12-6, while Iowa Falls-Alden needed an extra inning to beat Hampton-Dumont-CAL 8-5 in a game played in Clear Lake.

 

MASON CITY — Newman used a seven-run second inning as the catalyst for a 12-0, four inning win over Rockford last night in a Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal round softball game, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Leah Martinez had five runs batted in while Paige Leininger had four runs batted in and picked up the win in the circle, not allowing a hit and striking out six. Newman improves to 21-13 on the season and will travel to face 6th-ranked AGWSR on Friday, who edged St. Edmond 2-1 last night.

MASON CITY — Tonight in Class 4A Region 3, Mason City hosts Waverly-Shell Rock in a regional quarterfinal round contest. The Mohawks are 16-21 on the season while the Go-Hawks are 5-26. You can hear this game on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com starting with the pre-game at about 6:50 with the first pitch starting at 7 o’clock.

 

 

MASON CITY — Newman picked up a couple of wins on the baseball field on Wednesday, but not before a scare in their second game of the day. After beating West Fork in Sheffield in the afternoon 12-2, the Knights needed 12 runs in the final couple of innings to beat Forest City at home 15-12. The Indians jumped out with an eight-run top of the first and led 11-3 after four innings. Newman used a 10-run fifth and pushed across two more in the sixth to get the win. Jacob Schutt had four runs batted in and came in in relief to pick up the win on the mound, pitching three innings. Newman is now 29-3 and finishes the conference season with a 14-1 record. The Knights travel to Cedar Falls tonight.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Mason City High baseball team dropped a doubleheader at home to Dowling on Wednesday night. Dowling took the opener 6-3. Ben Pederson had two hits and three runs batted in for Mason City. Pederson socked a solo homer in the nightcap while Dylan Miller had three RBI but the Mohawks fell 11-4. Mason City drops to 22-13 and will travel to Ankeny Centennial on Monday night.

 

 

HAMPTON — Hampton-Dumont-CAL rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Clear Lake 4-3 in eight innings last night in North Central Conference baseball played in Hampton. Dustin Miller’s single pushed across Lucas Smith in the bottom of the eight for the deciding run. Chase Stuver was 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Lions, who drop to 13-13 overall and 8-5 in the conference. Clear Lake travels to Iowa Falls-Alden tonight before hosting Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday.

CLEAR LAKE — Doug Munn has been promoted to be Clear Lake High School’s next wrestling coach. Munn has been an assistant coach in the program for several years and has coached wrestling at various other schools before coming to Clear Lake. Munn replaces Mike Lester, who recently was named as the principal at Clear Lake Middle School. Munn will be assisted by Evan Johnson and Brad Brosdahl.

 

 

CHICAGO (AP) — Odyssey Sims hit the go-ahead jumper with 6.4 seconds to play and finished with 16 points in the Minnesota Lynx’s 73-72 victory over the Chicago Sky. Sylvia Fowles added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota. She has 156 career double-doubles, one shy of the WNBA record set by Lisa Leslie.

 

 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves are declining to match an offer sheet to Tyus Jones. That clears the way for the 6-foot-2 guard to join the Memphis Grizzlies. ESPN had reported that Jones and the Grizzlies had agreed to a three-year offer sheet worth $28 million. Jones averaged 6.9 points, 4.8 assists and 22.9 minutes for the Timberwolves this past season.
