LACEY, Wash. – NIACC sophomore Chandler Dean signed a national letter of intent Tuesday to play basketball at Saint Martin’s University.

Dean, a 6-foot-5 inch forward from South Jordan, Utah, averaged 6.9 points and 5.9 rebounds for NIACC in his sophomore season.

Saint Martin’s University, a NCAA Division II school, was 6-23 overall and 4-16 in the Great Northwest Atlantic Conference in 2019-20 under first-year coach Aaron Landon.

The Great Northwest Atlantic Conference is an 11-team league that includes schools in Alaska, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Dean was part of two NIACC teams that were a combined 50-12 from 2018-20 and played in two NJCAA Region XI title games. The Trojans were 25-5 in 2018-19 and 25-7 in 2019-20.

Landon said he likes Dean’s all-around game.

Dean, who scored 409 career points and grabbed 294 career rebounds, brings some intangibles to the Saints, according to Landon.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Spencer Lee was named co-winner of the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, presented annually since 1930 to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. The winner is determined by public vote, media vote, and committee vote.

Lee shared the award with Oregon women’s basketball player Sabrina Ionescu. It is the third time in the 90-year history of the Sullivan Award that co-winners were selected.

Lee is the fifth wrestler to be recognized. He joins Bruce Baumgartner, Rulon Gardner, John Smith, and Kyle Snyder as past amateur wrestling award winners.

He and Ionescu were selected among 10 finalists.

The Sullivan Awards are held annually at the New York Athletic Club. This is the first year they were held virtually. All 10 of this year’s finalists will be invited to visit the NYAC in 2021. Lee and Ionescu are both invited to celebrate their awards with the AAU at Walt Disney World.

Representatives from the AAU created the AAU James E. Sullivan Award with the intent to recognize amateur contributions and achievements from non-professional athletes across the country. The AAU Sullivan Award is presented to the athlete who has demonstrated the most athletic success, as well as leadership, character and sportsmanship in the past year.

IOWA CITY — Iowa strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle says all Hawkeye football players have the equipment they need to train for next season. With the campus shut down players are taking classes and working out at home.

Doyle says the players are using the same training methods they use on campus.

Doyle says the players have been forced to adapt to continue their training.

Doyle says one difference is he does not have as much access to the players from afar.

KNOXVILLE — The first sporting event in the state of Iowa is set for May 8th at the Knoxville Raceway as the track will host a World of Outlaws sprint car event. John McCoy is race director and says fans won’t be allowed but they can watch the show online.

McCoy says the event will be run by the World of Outlaws.

McCoy says in an industry that relies on fans it is not what they would prefer but it is a good way to get things started.

The World of Outlaws late model series will run at Boone Speedway with no fans on May 15th.
