Pence stops in Sheffield, Charles City

SHEFFIELD — Former vice president and current GOP White House candidate Mike Pence made a campaign swing through north-central Iowa on Monday afternoon, including a stop in Sheffield to talk to employees at Sukup Manufacturing.

Pence says he’s currently the most qualified candidate in the race. “Now more than ever we need leadership, with experience. I stand before you today, I’m running for president because I say with all humility that I believe I’m the most qualified, the most experienced, the most tested traditional conservative running in this race, and I’d ask for your support.”

Pence says inflation is putting a restraint on the country. “The strength of America is not in Washington DC, the strength is among the American people. By allowing families to keep more, businesses to keep more so they can invest back in ways and increase jobs and opportunities, allowing us to develop the resources of this land, rolling back regulations that literally cost us jobs.”

Pence was asked by a worker if Donald Trump won the GOP nomination if he would support him. “I’m more convinced than ever that you all are going to do what you always do and you are going to find leadership for the times. So I say to you without speculating on who it might be, I’m confident I would support the Republican nominee, and I’m going to work my heart out to earn your confidence and support and see to it that I have that opportunity. Because I know we can bring this country back. I know the American people, and I know with your support and God’s help, the best days for the greatest nation on earth are yet to come.”

Pence started his day Monday attending a 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Ankeny and after his stop in Sheffield visited Valero Renewables in Charles City.
