Oregon Man Gets Prison Sentence For Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Despite A Plea For A Delay

A man was sentenced to prison on Monday for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurgency, despite demanding that his sentencing be delayed until Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Jonathanpeter Allen Klein, 24, is among two Oregon brothers who are accused of storming the United States Capitol and entering a restricted area after a protest honoring the former president.

Jonathan Peter pled guilty in July to civil disorder and assault on select officers. His brother, Matthew Leland Klein, 28, also pled guilty to civil disorder and entering or remaining on prohibited property.

On November 15, Jonathan Peter’s counsel requested a 90-day postponement of Matthew’s sentence, which included 90 days in jail and three years of supervised release.

The records, released two days after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election, stated that under new leadership, the DOJ “may have different views on information that is exculpatory or mitigating in this case.”

However, a federal judge rejected the 90-day delay and instead granted a two-week extension because the prosecutor in the case “unexpectedly needed to go out on personal leave.”

According to court documents dated Monday, Jonathan Peter received a sentence of nine months in jail, three years of supervised release, and a $3,000 fine.

Jonathan Peter emailed his employer in late December 2020 to request a few days off in early January so he and his brother could attend the “Stop the Steal” event in Washington, D.C.

While outside the United States Capitol, Jonathan Peter reportedly tossed a piece of audiovisual equipment intended for President Joe Biden’s imminent inauguration directly at a Metropolitan Police Department officer.

A blow to the cop’s helmet left it visibly dented. According to the filings, body camera footage shows other law enforcement officers assisting him as he tripped and attempted to find his balance. The officer also stated that he briefly lost consciousness.

Jonathanpeter and Matthew were separated after entering the Capitol building, but investigators believe they joined other insurrectionists in “forcefully” pulling a door handle as authorities sought to prevent the throng from entering another side of the building.

President-elect Trump has already stated that he intends to pardon every Capitol rioter, describing them as political prisoners and “hostages.”
