Oklahoma Corp. Commissioner Faces Growing Calls for Resignation Amid Finger-Pointing

Oklahomans gathered for a meeting on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett. Hiett claimed that he has been the victim of a personal vendetta by another commissioner.

Allegations have arisen claiming that Hiett groped a man while under the influence during a business trip in Minneapolis. These claims were made in complaints to the Kansas Corporation Commission and suggest that the incident occurred at a hotel bar and involved an employee from a utility partner that reports to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Commissioner Bob Anthony made a formal request for Hiett to resign when he became aware of the allegations. However, Hiett declined, stating that his responsibilities were too significant for him to step down. He acknowledged seeking professional assistance and claimed to have no memory of the incident.

“I believe that the best course of action is to thoroughly clean and organize our living space,” Anthony stated on Tuesday.

During his prepared statement, Hiett expressed his willingness to cooperate with a proper investigation. However, he also made personal attacks against Anthony, accusing him of having personal vendettas.

Before four speakers had the opportunity to address the commission regarding the allegations against Hiett, a statement was made emphasizing the need for his resignation to alleviate the ongoing tension.

According to activist Jess Eddy, people are not interested in witnessing a long and messy fight, especially when it concerns someone who has already been victimized.

Rev. Lori Walke, a faith leader from Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ in Oklahoma City, also addressed the meeting. She commended Hiett for his willingness to listen attentively to the speakers and maintain eye contact as they shared their criticisms. However, she expressed her concern about his inappropriate attack on Anthony, suggesting that it seemed like a deliberate attempt to divert attention from his own personal responsibility and what he should do next.

Commissioners acknowledged that the commission will play a role in conducting an internal investigation to address the allegations that have been raised. However, any matters related to criminal activity will need to be handled by Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s office.

During Tuesday’s meeting, David expressed his desire for the investigation to commence as soon as possible.

Both Eddy and Walke acknowledged the challenging and uncomfortable situation that she has been placed in. However, Walke emphasized the need for David to take further action.

“I commend Commissioner Hiett for taking a courageous stand and initiating an investigation. However, her actions have placed Commissioner David and others in a challenging predicament. While I appreciate her efforts, I believe it is time for her to also demand her colleague’s resignation.”
