IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Mekhi Sargent ran for a 14-yard score with 2:16 left and 23rd-ranked Iowa held off Purdue 26-20 on Saturday, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Tyler Goodson scored his first career touchdown from a yard out and Keith Duncan kicked four field goals for the Hawkeyes (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten), who also broke a two-game skid against the Boilermakers (2-5, 1-3).

Purdue made the Hawkeyes earn this one, though.

The Boilermakers cut it to 19-13 on J.D. Dellinger’s 36-yard field goal with 2:59 left. But Purdue was assessed a personal foul after squibbing the ensuing kickoff to midfield, and runs of 21 and 14 yards by Sargent gave the Hawkeyes the cushion they’d been looking for all day.

Jack Plummer’s 1-yard TD pass to Payne Durham with 24 seconds left made it 26-20. But Iowa secured the onside kick.

David Bell caught 13 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown for Purdue, which ran for just 33 yards.

Duncan hit field goals of 30, 44, 42 and 38 yards on a wet afternoon in Iowa City. He’s now 17 of 19 on the season.

Iowa visits Northwestern this week. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 o’clock with the pre-game at 9 o’clock on Saturday on KGLO.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, freshman Breece Hall ran 75 yards for the first of his two scores and Iowa State took a big lead early in a 34-24 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday.

Purdy had 277 yards and all three of his scoring tosses for a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter, with two TDs to tight end Charlie Kolar, as the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) won their third straight game since losing at Baylor in their only other scheduled trip to Texas.

The Red Raiders (3-4, 1-3) extended their longest losing streak in the series with Iowa State to four, dropping their second in a row this season since beating Oklahoma State for the best victory so far under first-year coach Matt Wells.

Purdy was 15 of 17 and had the ball again in the second quarter with the 20-point lead when he threw three straight incompletions. The Red Raiders answered with a 6-yard TD run by SoRodorick Thompson, who scored twice.

Texas Tech opened the second half with a field goal to get within 20-10 before Hall’s long scoring run on the next play.

Hall added a punctuating 30-yard TD in the fourth quarter and finished with 183 yards rushing, his season high for the second straight week after going for 132 yards with three touchdowns in a 38-14 win over West Virginia.

Jett Duffey, coming off the first consecutive 350-plus-yard passing games for Texas Tech since Patrick Mahomes in 2016, was 40 of 52 for 239 yards with a mostly meaningless touchdown late.

Purdy had quite a stretch of slightly more than two quarters in Texas, from the rally he engineered late in the 23-21 loss to Baylor to the first quarter-plus against the Red Raiders. The sophomore completed 27 of 33 passes for 456 yards with five TDs in that stretch.

The Cyclones are 5-2 and next up will host Oklahoma State.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will McElvain threw three touchdown passes to Isaiah Weston, Tyler Hoosman scored two touchdowns, and Northern Iowa defeated South Dakota 42-27 on Saturday.

Austin Evans returned an interception 16 yards for the Panthers’ other touchdown.

Northern Iowa, No. 15 in the FCS Coaches Poll, had 417 yards total offense but only 11 first downs. The Panthers were 5 of 13 converting on third down.

South Dakota did not reach the end zone after a first quarter in which Kai Henry ran for a touchdown and Austin Simmons threw two touchdown passes for a 21-14 lead.

After Northern Iowa (4-3, 2-1 Missouri Valley) trailed 24-21 at halftime, McElvain and Weston connected on scoring passes of 65 and 54 yards in the third quarter. Hoosman’s 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

Weston had four catches for 189 yards. Hoosman carried 24 times for 111 yards.

Simmons completed 26 of 43 passes for 299 yards with the two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Coyotes (3-4, 2-1).

DETROIT (AP) — Kirk Cousins matched a career high with four touchdown passes, leading the surging Minnesota Vikings to a 42-30 win over the slumping Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Vikings (5-2) have won three consecutive games in part because their quarterback is making plays to complement one of the NFL’s top defenses.

Matthew Stafford also threw four touchdown passes, all to Marvin Jones, and became the fastest to reach 40,000 yards passing in NFL history. And Jones became the first Lions player in the Super Bowl era with four receiving TDs in a game.

Cousins was 24 of 34 for a season-high 337 yards and four TDs without an interception.

Dalvin Cook had 142 yards rushing and two TDs on 25 carries. Stefon Diggs had seven receptions for 142 yards.

Adam Thielen caught the first of four TD passes from Cousins in the first quarter and the receiver didn’t return because of a hamstring injury.

On Sunday, Zachary Simon had two goals while Ryan Hempel had the game-winner 4:32 into the third period to give North Iowa a 3-2 win. North Iowa is 11-1 on the season, and the Bulls this weekend have a home-and-home against the New Ulm Steel, with Friday’s game on the road and Saturday’s contest at the North Iowa Ice Arena at 7:30.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild called a players-only meeting as they struggled to start the season. In their first game since that meeting, the Wild earned a win and gained a sense of relief.

Zach Parise scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and the Wild won their second game of the season, beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Sunday.

Jason Zucker, Marcus Foligno and Brad Hunt also scored for Minnesota, which matched its highest goal total through eight games this season. The Wild also scored four goals in a 7-4 home loss to Pittsburgh.

Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves and earned his first win of the season.
