MASON CITY – The NIACC volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Northeast Community College in the Region XI-B title match Sunday afternoon in the NIACC gym.

Northeast won 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13.

Northeast, the tournament’s third seed, advances to the Division II national tournament in Charleston, W.V. Fifth-seed Kirkwood knocked off top-seed Iowa Central 3-2 in the Region XI-A title match so the Eagles now play at Metropolitan Community College (Kansas City, Mo.) in the North Central district championship on Nov. 9 with that winner qualifying for the national tournament.

NIACC’s Kennedy Meister and Becca Steffen were selected to the Region XI-B all-tournament team. Northeast’s selections were Hannah Heppner, MaKayla Davidson and tournament MVP Josie Sanger.

Southeastern’s Rachel Malinowski and Hawkeye Community College’s Jessica Hopkins also were selected to the all-tournament team.

Meister collected 20 kills, 23 digs and four blocks in the title match. Steffen had 27 assists, 15 digs and 11 kills.

NIACC finishes the season with a record of 31-10

 

 

IOWA FALLS — Both NIACC basketball teams won their games at the Dale Howard Classic at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls over the weekend.

== On the women’s side, after beating the Grand View JV Friday 97-86, NIACC beat Bryant & Stratton College of Milwaukee 87-82, as you heard on KGLO. Freshman Sierra Lynch had 26 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore Kelcie Hale scored a career-high 25 points. NIACC will return to action this weekend hosting the Konigsmark Klassic, facing 5th-ranked Illinois Central on Friday night and Marshalltown Community College on Saturday.

== The NIACC men beat Hibbing Community College on Friday 118-74, led by 28 points from Wendell Matthews. The Trojans then beat Bryant & Stratton 119-88 on Saturday. The NIACC men will face Kansas City Kansas Community College on Friday night and Quakerdale Prep Academy on Saturday in the Konigsmark Klassic.

 

 

IOWA CITY — Sophomore center Monica Czinano scored 27 points as the Iowa Hawkeye women rolled to a 98-53 win over Winona State in an exhibition game that you heard on KGLO Sunday afternoon. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder.

Czinano was 13 of 13 from the field and Bluder was happy with the ball movement.

Mason City’s Makenzie Meyer played 28 minutes, handing out a team-high eight assists while scoring five points and grabbing four rebounds. Sister Megan Meyer played nine minutes in her first game in a Hawkeye uniform, grabbing a rebound and dishing out an assist but not scoring. Iowa opens up the season on Thursday night hosting Florida Atlantic in a game you’ll hear on KGLO starting at 6:15 with the pre-game.

 

 

CEDAR FALLS — The Northern Iowa men open the regular season on Tuesday night by hosting Old Dominion. UNI coach Ben Jacobson.

The teams split two games a year ago. The Panthers are looking to build momentum from a late run a year ago that took them to the championship game of the Missouri Valley Tournament.

With 10 players back from last year, including six seniors, Jacobson likes the experience on this team.

Tipoff Tuesday night is scheduled for 7 o’clock at the McLeod Center.

 

 

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Will McElvain threw three touchdown passes, the Northern Iowa defense came up with three interceptions and the Panthers defeated Illinois State 27-10 on Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference matchup of Top 10 teams.

McElvain’s 16-yard strike to Suni Lane in the final minute of the first half put the Panthers (6-3, 4-1) on top 14-7. The duo hooked up for a 27-yard score with 11 minutes to play for a 21-10 lead. Matthew Cook finished the next two drives, setup by Xavior Williams’ fumble recovery and a Christian Jegen interception, both deep in ISU territory, with field goals.

McElvain was 14 of 28 for 189 yards with an interception.

Illinois State (6-3, 3-2) had only 63 yards of offense in the second half, only scoring on a field goal that was set up by a fumble recovery at the Northern Iowa 30. The Redbirds finished with 210 yards.

 

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Harrison Butker matched a career long with a 54-yard field goal to tie the game in the fourth quarter, then drilled a 44-yarder as time expired to give the Chiefs a heart-stopping 26-23 victory over the Vikings on Sunday. The first person to greet Butker in celebration was Patrick Mahomes, who missed his second straight game with a knee injury. Matt Moore started in his place and threw for 275 yards and a score.

 

 

FORT DODGE — At the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, the West Fork boys finished 9th, Newman 14th, and St. Ansgar 15th in the Class 1A team race. Madrid won the team title with 74 points. West Fork had 223, Newman had 260, St. Ansgar had 303. Josh Reiter had West Fork’s best finish, ending 21st in a time of 17:09. Newman’s best finish came from Braden Petree, who was 30th in a time of 17:32. Riley Witt of St. Ansgar finished 20th in a time of 17:15.

MASON CITY — It was a tough opening weekend for a shorthanded Mohawk high school hockey club, falling to Dubuque twice at home, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB. Dubuque scored five straight goals in the final seven minutes of the third period to take Saturday’s contest 7-5. The Devils then scored eight of their nine goals in the first two periods on their way to a 9-5 victory. Nick Howell led the way for the Mohawks, having five goals and two assists for the weekend. Mason City travels to face the Des Moines Capitals on Friday night before returning home to host Cedar Rapids this weekend. You can hear both of the Cedar Rapids games on KRIB at 3:30 Saturday and 11:00 AM Sunday.

 

 

MASON CITY — Lucas Wahlin scored 4:15 into overtime to give the North Iowa Bulls a 3-2 win over Alexandria on Saturday night at the North Iowa Ice Arena. The Blizzard jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Bulls came back with goals by Jac Triemert with 3:16 left in the opening period and Cam Fagerlee scoring his 11th goal of the season 7:44 into the second period. North Iowa is now 12-2 with an overtime loss and will host Rochester on Friday night and Willmar on Saturday evening.
