KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning to complete Minnesota’s comeback from a six-run deficit, lifting the Twins over the Kansas City Royals 7-6. Down 6-0, the Twins scored five times in the eighth, capped by Kyle Garlick’s two-run homer. Jorge Polanco drew a leadoff walk from Josh Staumont in the ninth, Max Kepler doubled and Gary Sanchez tied it with his second sacrifice fly in two innings. With two outs, Urshela singled for the lead.

 

DES MOINES — The Clear Lake girls finished sixth in the team race in the Class 2A girls state track meet in Des Moines over the weekend. The Lions scored 32 points and were led by Reese Brownlee, who won the girls long jump, finished third in the 400, sixth in the 200, and was part of a sprint medley relay team that finished fourth. Addison Doughan also medaled in three events, finishing fifth in the 1500, sixth in the 3000 and eighth in the 800. Osage finished 11th in the 2A girls team race with 24 points. Meredith Street finished third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 400. Brooklyn Halbach was eighth in the 100 hurdles, while Katelyn Johnston also medaled with third-place finishes in the 3000 and 7th-place in the 1500. Mid-Prairie of Wellman won the 2A girls team title with 65 points.

== Top of Iowa Conference member Nashua-Plainfield won the girls Class 1A title with 59 points, edging second-place Madrid who scored 54 points. Solon won the 3A title with 84 points, with ADM being second with 66. Waukee Northwest won the 4A title in the program’s inaugural season, scoring 70 points, with Norwalk finishing second with 50.

== St. Ansgar finished fifth in the boys Class 1A team race with 37 points, with New London winning the title with 68 points and Earlham finishing second with 66. Riley Witt won two titles, winning the 1600 and 3200, while finishing second in the 800.

== Spirit Lake won the 2A boys team title with 92.5 points. Belmond-Klemme was sixth with 27 points while Clear Lake was tied for 10th with 21 points. Dallas Center-Grimes won the 3A title with 73 points, edging Pella with 71.5. Dowling of West Des Moines won the 4A team title with 93 points, with City High of Iowa City finishing second with 63.5 points.

== Wyatt Willand won four championships in the boys wheelchair division of the state track meet. He won the 100 in a time of 17.12, the 200 in 30.27, the 400 in 59.65, and the 800 in 1:56.63. He single-handedly won the boys wheelchair team title with 40 points, with Cedar Falls second with 37

HUTCHINSON, KANSAS— NIACC’s Melvin Kipkemboi wrapped up his Trojan track career over the weekend at the national junior college track meet in Hutchinson Kansas. Kipkemboi, a sophomore from Rift Valley Kenya, placed fifth in the 5000 meters on Saturday afternoon in a time of 14:40.97. On Friday, he placed seventh in the 3000 steeplechase in a school record time of 9:29.06. Also Saturday for the Trojans, sophomore Randry Mugisha was 11th in the javelin with a toss of 137-7. Kameron Glasper was 16th in the discus (142-4). For the NIACC women, Halsie Keltner was 10th in the javelin with a toss of 117-4. The 10th place finish by Keltner was the highest finish for a NIACC female athlete at the outdoor national meet since Kasey Parish placed sixth in the javelin at the 2019 national meet.

 

AMES — Boys state golf gets underway in Ames today. In Class 1A, Lake Mills and North Butler qualified as teams, while in Class 2A, Osage qualified as a team. The two-day tournaments take place at three different golf courses in Ames — 1A at the Ames Golf & Country Club, 2A at Coldwater Golf Links, and 3A at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.
